Description

Ferrari’s 2.4-liter Dino V6 engine has its roots in the 1950s in various configurations, but the specific 2.4-liter version was produced at the Fiat factory from 1969 and well into the 1970s. In addition to the Fiat Dino, it was used in Ferrari’s small Dino 246 GT/GTS and the rally legend Lancia Stratos.

On this particular engine, one exhaust valve has broken; the valve head remains seated in the valve seat. It has been inspected with a camera and no other damage to the components has been observed. The engine does turn, but it cannot and should not be started—of course. At the time it had covered approximately 110,000 km (about 68,000 miles), with several services, maintenance actions, and inspections carried out over the years.

Before the valve incident—which, incidentally, occurred at idle—the owner had previously had a slightly more performance-oriented engine and gearbox built for greater driving enjoyment and performance. The fact that the original engine and gearbox, and thus the units’ matching numbers, are now being separated does not affect the decision to sell, according to the owner.

The gearbox is a 5-speed ZF S5-18/3, rebuilt and in very good working condition. The transmission was used by many manufacturers in both contemporary and later models, in everyday cars as well as in competition. Examples include Alfa Romeo Alfa 6, Alfa Romeo Montreal, BMW 2002 Turbo, BMW 3.0 and 3.5 CSL, BMW Alpina and Schnitzer homologation models for racing, Fiat 130, Ford Capri RS, Ford Escort Mk1/Mk2 rally cars, Maserati Biturbo, Maserati Quattroporte II, Maserati 228, Opel Kadett C GTE, Opel Ascona GTE, Opel Manta, Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, and Vauxhall Viva and Firenze—among others.
