"One of the most meticulously constructed 240 Appendix-K project cars we've come across. Built by a professional auto body mechanic with 19 years of experience at Volvo. Everything available new from Volvo has been acquired over a period of 10 years."

Description

The owner, who has worked for a long time in an authorized Volvo workshop, has renovated and built several Volvo 240s for exhibition and rally. In 2013, he purchased this 1982 model, which was at the time an untouched original 242. The body was water blasted and then reinforced and modified exactly the same way Volvo built the Group A cars between 1981 and 1984. (See separate specifications for details of the work done).

The body parts that were replaced were substituted with new NOS sheet metal parts from Volvo. These include completely new rear fenders, front fenders, doors, and hood. Also, floor plates, sills, and the front were replaced with Volvo original sheet metal. The wheel housings are modified in the same way as the original Group A cars, and the wipers were changed to single wipers. The roll cage was manufactured and installed by Rallyprodukter in Vålberg, who also certified it.

Following this, the body was epoxy primed, and all joints were sealed before it was primed and sanded for an equally high finish inside and underneath as on the outside. Professionally painted in the cradle, with Volvo's Anthracite Gray color, paint code 177. Everything visible in the pictures comes with the car. The engine is an untouched B21 ET block. The gearbox is the correct Getrag 5-speed gearbox. Original new, reinforced front cross member with mounted Sellholm steering gear ZF. After a long search, the right NOS tinted turbo windows were found. USA headlights and turn signals, as well as original taillights Hella completely new from Volvo. Also new rubber seals, new lockboxes, new power windows, NOS decorative sets from Volvo. WRC jack stands with reinforcement in sills.

Among the larger items that a buyer may need to supplement, which are not included in this purchase, are the electrical system, ignition system, rear axle, suspension, and brakes.

Facts about the model

Volvo's 240 Group A racing campaign ran from 1981 to 1986. In recent years, interest in Volvo's Group A history with the Volvo 240 Turbo from the 1980s has increased among car collectors and racing enthusiasts. 1985 was a golden year for Volvo in motorsport. The Volvo 240 Turbo, derogatorily referred to by competitors as the "brick," won both the European Touring Car Championship (ETC) and its German equivalent, the Deutsche Touringwagen Meisterschaft (DTM). As if ETC and DTM weren't enough, Volvo also won standard car championships in Finland, Portugal, and New Zealand in 1985. Additionally, a right-hand-drive 240 Turbo won the Scottish Rally Championship the same year.

ETC, the European Touring Car Championship, was an international racing car competition organized by the FIA, running from 1963 to 1988. To be classified and compete in the Group A class, the car had to be at least four-seater and manufactured in 500 identical examples within one year. This was known as an Evolution car. Simultaneously, the car manufacturer had to base the Evolution car on a standard car that had already been produced in at least 5000 examples. As per the rules, a minimum of 500 so-called evolution cars had to be built – hence the creation of the 240 Turbo Evolution. In July 1983, the 500 examples were lined up for homologation inspection – divided into two fields in the USA, one on the west coast and one on the east coast. The cars had a larger turbo and modified engine management system.

In 1984, serious competition began in Group A. Volvo took care of the design and homologation of the required components. The racing was to be managed by independent teams. In this first year, there were two victories. Swedes Ulf Granberg and Robert L. Kvist won at the Belgian Zolder in ETC, and fellow countryman Per Stureson won at the German Norisring in the first season of DTM. In the class where Volvo competed with the 242 turbo, cars with a cylinder volume of up to 3 liters (3000cc) were allowed. This meant that Volvo was up against cars with up to 12 cylinders. The competition included, among others, BMW 635csi, Alf Romero Alfetta GTV V6, and Jaguar XJ-S, and later Ford Sierra RS500 and BMW E30 M5.

In 1986, Volvo withdrew from racing. It announced that it would no longer compete with factory teams. The development of the 240 Turbo was discontinued by Volvo Motorsport, and Volvo's heyday in Group A was over.

Volvo Turbo Cup.
Already in 1981, the same year Volvo introduced the 240 Turbo, the Volvo Turbo Cup was started. An initiative by Bo Wiksås in Volvo's racing department. An economy class where participants drove Volvo 240 models from the 1975 model year and onwards. The common denominator was that all cars were equipped with Volvo's special R-Sport Turbo kits, which increased the power of the B21 engine to 180hp. The Volvo Turbo Cup became a formidable success.
