"Well-preserved NSU"

Description

This specimen of the Svalan model 25 is essentially an NSU 251 OSL assembled by the Svalan factory in Falun in 1951 as a 1952 model. On January 4, 1952, this motorcycle was registered and sold to a man who worked as a lumberjack in Arjeplog. Due to the weather and road conditions in Norrbotten, the motorcycle wasn't used much, but the man managed to ride around 20,000 kilometers until 1959 when the bike was put away. The current owner purchased the motorcycle about 20 years ago. He brought it home and immediately started the restoration. The engine was handed over to Stigs Motor, which did the necessary work on it. The entire motorcycle had been brush-painted with black paint, including the rims and the tank. The original plan was to dismantle the motorcycle and repaint it, but after getting a tip about a good paint remover, the owner managed, after several weeks of work, to remove all the painted paint, revealing the original finish. To the owner's surprise, and even some Svalan experts, it turned out that this particular specimen had stripes on the rims and tank in Falun's own red hue. This specimen is in its original state, except for the rear light which was missing at the time of purchase. The Svalan decals on the tank were mounted as they were when delivered in 1952. The bike has been used for about 2,000 kilometers since the current owner renovated it, but it has been stationary for the past few years, so a start-up service is recommended before using it again.

Facts about the model

Already in 1924, the factory owner John Eriksson, originally from Österfärnebo, began selling bicycles under the name Svalan in Falun. At first, he purchased parts, and the main activity was assembling these parts. However, during the 1930s, they started manufacturing both bicycles and lightweight bikes entirely on their own.
In the 1950s, there were about 80 employees at the factory, and they also began producing their own moped. It was named Svalette, and its fuel tank was built into the frame. This was highlighted in advertisements as a significant advantage over a separate tank.
The motorcycle era in Falun lasted for about 20 years, from 1939 until the end of the 1950s.
There are still several Svalan motorcycles on the roads today. Many of these have been restored by enthusiasts who take great care of them.
