Volvo 760 GLE 2.8 V6 — 1988

It started as a test car in Volvo’s own testing department and later became a national celebrity through an unusual and well-publicized sale. Still in exemplary condition.

"An exciting background and a very fine representative of Volvo’s luxury model from this era."

Description

It began its life in Kalmar on April 25, 1988, with U.S. specifications. This included features such as an airbag and seatbelt pretensioners according to American standards. Some details from the U.S. package include labels and an ECC system showing temperatures in Fahrenheit. However, it was never intended to be sent to the United States. Instead, it was taken to Gothenburg, where it became a test vehicle - a prototype mule. The engine bay has housed Volvo's straight-six engine for the upcoming 960 model. It also had an additional fuel tank with a filling point on the right rear fender to test different fuels. The service book from the early years bears stamps from Volvo Division 27, the testing department, and signatures from Dick Svanberg, who was responsible for the service and modification of test vehicles at AB Volvo.

In 1992, it was removed from the test department and registered with Volvo company cars for a period before being released to the public. It was then sold to Carlqvist Bil in Tingsryd and subsequently to another buyer.

In 2015, Claes Tingvall, former Director of Traffic Safety at the Swedish Road Administration, became the owner of the car. A few years later, in 2019, he decided to sell it through an unconventional method - a reverse auction! He advertised it at a certain price and reduced the price by 500 kronor each day until someone made an offer. The current owner seized the opportunity and used the car as a daily driver for several years, making various replacements and repairs over time.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

In recent years, the following work has been done on the car: The AC compressor was replaced with a new one in 2019, along with a new dryer and refrigerant (Segerlöfs, Gothenburg). However, the AC is currently not functioning, but a new condenser is included.

The rear springs and shock absorbers were replaced in 2019, converting from Sachs Nivomat to standard shock absorbers (Sachs) and springs. The output shaft bearing in the automatic transmission was replaced in 2019. The support bearing was replaced in 2019. The left rear wheel bearing was replaced in 2021. All side moldings were replaced after a theft in 2021. The left rear brake caliper was replaced in 2022. Both front brake discs and brake shields were replaced in 2022. The left front brake caliper was replaced in 2023. The water pump was replaced in 2024. All work was carried out by Volvo specialist Retroservice in Särö.

The adjustment mechanism for the front seats does not work, and the fuel gauge operates sporadically and inconsistently.

  • Interior condition:

Very nice and well-maintained interior. The leather upholstery feels soft and well-cared for with no significant wear, except for a small tear in a seam on the driver’s seat. The headliner is intact but has come loose and is pinned up in a few places.

  • Exterior condition:

The exterior makes a very good impression, and the paint has a nice shine. The bumpers are in good condition with minimal scuffing at the corners. There are a few small blisters, particularly at the bottom edges of the doors, but they are limited in scope. There is a small paint touch-up—possibly a repair—at the right rear wheel arch. This fender was likely replaced when the test program for the car ended.

  • General condition:

An unusual background with a period in the spotlight and an exceptionally good condition where mileage and age have not significantly affected anything. The last three owners have been a collector, a traffic safety director, and an enthusiast who used and maintained the car meticulously. The reverse auction was noted both in the car world and in regular news. Link to Fredrik Nyblad’s article in Klassiker 2019: https://www.klassiker.nu/reportage/mula-i-baklangsauktion
