"A true classic that is a delight to drive, full of charm and character. Mechanically, everything is in proper order and the car performs very well on the road. There are a few minor cosmetic items to address on the bodywork for anyone who wishes to take it to the next level."

Description

This car was ordered new on February 7, 1955, by farmer Gustav Andersson of Skalkarike in Västergötland. It was delivered by Bil & Traktor in Mariestad, the local Volvo dealer at the time. The car is an HS model, meaning it was equipped with upgraded upholstery and additional chrome trim compared with the standard version.

From the factory, the car was also specified with a number of optional extras, including a heater, mud flaps, twin fog lamps, reversing light, registration plates, and antifreeze. At the time, the total purchase price amounted to the staggering sum of 9,150 SEK. Power comes from a 44-horsepower B4B engine paired with a three-speed gearbox featuring a non-synchronized first gear.

On October 15, 1986, the car was sold to Roland Storm in Mariestad, who remained its owner until his passing in 2023. The current owner purchased the car through Bilweb Auctions in 2023. The car has covered just under 56,000 kilometers, a figure well documented through the 16 inspection reports included with the car, spanning from 1966 up to the final inspection in 2017.

Due to the cellulose paint commonly used during the 1950s — which often became heavily faded over time — the car was repainted at some point during the 1980s.

An extensive collection of historical documentation accompanies the car, including the original order form with receipt, warranty certificate, lubrication chart, insurance papers, owner’s manual, and more.

Between 1985 and 1998, the car covered only 130 kilometers.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Technically, the car feels very good, both in terms of the engine and gearbox. It starts very easily and runs quietly and smoothly. All functions are in proper working order, so it is simply a matter of getting in and driving.

The tires are relatively old and are the correct period-style cross-ply tires, just as they should be on a car of this type.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in fine condition overall, with well-preserved and intact upholstery and headliner. The carpet is complete, though somewhat faded and slightly dirty. There are a few areas on the dashboard where the paint has begun to flake. The trim pieces remain in good, honest usable condition.

  • Exterior condition

The paintwork presents well with a fine shine, complemented by good chrome trim, moldings, and glass surfaces. There is some rust visible along the lower edges of the fenders on both sides. We could not identify any perforation, but there is visible bubbling. A dent is also present behind the left front fender, affecting a somewhat larger area of the body surface.

  • General condition

A delightful car with a wonderful history, low mileage, and a strong ownership record. With a little attention to a few areas of the bodywork, this has every potential to become a truly charming gem.
