"A fine and well-kept car that functions well and has been driven sparingly in recent years. This example still has plenty more to give and is a lively little representative of Porsche’s entry-level model from the 1980s. As with all cars that have seen limited use in recent years, a general inspection/service is recommended."

Description

This car was first registered for road use on November 12, 1982. The most recent owner, a vehicle enthusiast, acquired it in January 2005. His wife took over ownership on January 30 this year. Over the years, the owner carried out most of the servicing himself, including oil changes and general maintenance. The interior was reupholstered by him as well, as he was a professional upholsterer/saddler.

The odometer currently reads 82,320 km, although it has been out of service for several years. The car has, however, barely been driven during that time — essentially only to and from vehicle inspections. It has always been stored in a garage and is equipped with an engine heater.

Included with the car are the original owner’s manuals and related documentation, along with two keys.

The car was inspected on May 5 this year and is ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts without problems and the engine ran smoothly, although the battery was insufficiently charged. During a short test drive in a residential area, everything — including the steering, clutch, gearbox, suspension components, and brakes — appeared to function well.

Not inspected on a lift, but what could be seen looked good, and the car has been rustproofed over the years. There have been no remarks during vehicle inspections.

  • Interior condition

A fine original interior, apart from the seats and rear bench which have been professionally reupholstered in leather. The steering wheel, controls, gauges, and dashboard are all in fine condition, although a couple of buttons on the center console were slightly loose. Everything appears to function properly, including the manual removable sunroof mechanism. Blaupunkt cassette stereo included.

  • Exterior condition

Fine paintwork that appears to be in original condition, showing normal wear consistent with its age and mileage. The glass, trim, emblems, and lighting details are likewise in fine original condition. The sunroof seals properly. The engine bay and luggage compartment are in excellent condition. Attractive wheels and good tires.

  • General condition

A fine and lively people’s sports car that marked the beginning of Porsche’s development toward front-engined, rear-wheel-drive models with greater comfort and practicality. This classic has been driven sparingly, has survived the years remarkably well, and is now ready for a new enthusiastic owner.

Facts about the model

The Porsche 924 departed from many of the brand’s traditional hallmarks. It featured a front-mounted, water-cooled engine, coil springs on the front axle, and a transaxle layout. The model was developed by Porsche in cooperation with Volkswagen/Audi and was originally intended to become Audi’s flagship model. Porsche designed not only the body and interior, but also the chassis and drivetrain. The only requirement from VW/Audi was that the drivetrain should accommodate the existing two-liter engine from the Audi 100 and Volkswagen LT. However, VW/Audi lost confidence during the oil crisis and sold the entire project to Porsche.

The 924 quickly became known as a well-balanced car to drive. Motoring journalists wrote that it was the best-handling Porsche model the factory had ever produced. Good aerodynamics, near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, a 125-hp engine, and a five-speed gearbox with a very short shifter all contributed to the experience. Combined with its low seating position and relatively light weight, the car was widely regarded as having true sports car ambitions.

A Turbo version was introduced for the 1978 model year, and in 1986 the 924S arrived with a new Porsche-designed engine.

The model was produced from the 1976 to 1988 model years, with a total of 152,082 examples built.
