"A value-for-money SL with a certain understated elegance. After all, the model is not particularly large in physical size."

Description

It was first registered for use in Sweden and delivered to its first owner in November 1992. According to the records, the car has had nine owners, although several of them appear to have been dealers. The current owner has used the car since 2013.

Service documentation is missing, but at the same time the car has covered no more than 7,000 kilometers since 2010. It has been off the road since November 20, 2020. Two keys and the owner’s manual are included.

Today, the car has been transported to House of Classics outside Löddeköpinge, where it has been washed, started, and test driven. It is being sold on behalf of an estate.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts normally, the gearbox shifts smoothly, and the chassis feels correct during a short test drive. The convertible top is intact and clean both inside and out. It was possible to lower the roof, partly manually, but a sensor or microswitch does not appear to engage properly. As a result, the top is currently in the lowered position and cannot be raised again. The convertible-top switch flashes red, and the car displays a warning while driving.

  • Interior condition

The interior is attractive and shows very little wear, which is hardly surprising considering the car’s low mileage. The controls and buttons are in good condition, the radio works properly, and the air conditioning blows cold. The inner lining of the convertible top is also in very good condition.

  • Exterior condition

The car retains a good original paint finish that would benefit from polishing and some cosmetic attention. It has recently been washed after a long period of storage.

The car is fitted with 18-inch Lorinser aftermarket wheels mounted with good Hankook Ventus tires. The right front wheel has some scratches on the center section of the rim. The spare wheel remains the original factory item.

  • General condition

A value-for-money example with low mileage, though without documented service history. Presented in representative overall condition, with an unidentified electrical fault affecting the convertible top.

Facts about the model

The SL-Class with the internal designation R129 was produced between 1989 and 2001. It was introduced at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show as the successor to the long-running R107 generation. Chief designer Bruno Sacco gave the car a timeless, wedge-shaped profile with clean lines, and it immediately became a symbol of success in markets around the world. Demand at launch was so high that some buyers reportedly had to wait several years for delivery.

Technically, the chassis was based on a modified and shortened version of the robust W124 E-Class platform. Mercedes spared no expense in filling the model with groundbreaking innovations that reshaped the industry’s approach to safety and comfort. The most famous feature was the automatic roll bar, which remained completely hidden behind the seats during normal driving but deployed in a fraction of a second if the car’s sensors detected an impending rollover.

The model was also equipped with advanced electrically adjustable seats featuring integrated seat belts, adaptive dampers, and a fully automatic electro-hydraulic soft top, complemented by a removable aluminum hardtop for winter use.

Throughout its long production run, the R129 was offered with a wide range of engines. The lineup ranged from the inline-six engines found in the 300 SL up to the V8-powered 500 SL. Later, the range was expanded further with the introduction of the mighty V12-powered 600 SL.

The model underwent two major updates during the 1990s, receiving features such as more modern rounded indicators, updated engine families, and revised interior details. By the time production ended in 2001, more than 200,000 examples had been built.
