"Low mileage and offering excellent potential following a mechanical inspection and service, detailing, and a new set of tires. Repairing the sagging headliner would also greatly enhance the interior presentation and overall feel."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner on March 23, 1997, by the dealer Hedbergs Bil AB in Malmö. The first owner appears to have used the car normally during its early years before trading it back to the dealership in 2003. According to the registration records, the car has had four private owners in total, and the current owner (the estate) acquired it in 2004. He drove the car sparingly throughout the years.

The most recent service was carried out in 2009 at 40,920 kilometers, while the latest approved inspection took place in 2020 at 42,840 kilometers. A few months later, in November of that year, the car was taken off the road. Today, it has been started and washed. Throughout its life, the car has remained with owners based in Malmö.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts easily, the gearbox feels good, and the brakes and chassis perform as they should. However, the car has not been serviced since 2009 and has covered very few kilometers since then. The approved inspection in 2020 is at least reassuring, but before being put back into regular use, the car should undergo a thorough mechanical inspection and service.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in fine and fresh condition, although the headliner is sagging — as is so often the case with cars from this era. The instruments, controls, steering wheel, and wood trim are all clean and intact. The door panels and glass are in good condition, and the original rubber floor mats remain very well preserved, complete with the typical additional “Orient” mats placed on top.

  • Exterior condition

The car retains its original paintwork, which would benefit from polishing and some general cosmetic attention. It has only been washed following a long period of storage. Some surface residue or discoloration is visible in a few areas, but it appears likely that much of it can be polished away quite easily. A slight color difference on the right front fender may indicate that the panel has been repainted at some point.

The car sits on its original wheels, which show a few minor scuffs and scratches, and are fitted with older Pirelli tires that should now be replaced.

  • General condition

An exciting original example with low mileage. The car benefits from a careful and frequent service history up until 2009, providing an excellent foundation for a very appealing youngtimer.

The headliner, however, will need to be removed and refurbished outside the car. There are several ways of addressing this, with many skilled specialists offering the service, as well as numerous helpful how-to videos available online.

Facts about the model

The 1997 Jaguar XJ6 represents the culmination of the X300 generation and marks the definitive end of an era in British automotive history. This was the very last production year for Jaguar’s legendary inline-six engine — in this case, the dependable 4.0-liter AJ16 unit producing 241 horsepower. From the following model year onward, Jaguar switched to V8 engines, making the 1997 model a true milestone for marque enthusiasts.

The car’s improved reliability and build quality were a direct result of Ford’s acquisition of Jaguar in the late 1980s. Ford invested billions into modernizing production methods and electrical systems at the Coventry factory, solving many of the quality issues that had plagued earlier generations. At the same time, Jaguar’s designers successfully reintroduced the brand’s classic styling cues, including the four round headlights and the low, elegant profile customers had long associated with the marque.

The Sovereign badge signified that the car was configured for maximum traditional luxury rather than outright sporting performance. The model featured a softer, comfort-oriented suspension setup, extra-thick leather upholstery, extensive use of genuine wood veneers and trim, and period luxury features such as electrically adjustable memory seats and fully automatic climate control.

Today, the 1997 models are widely regarded as offering one of the best balances between Jaguar’s traditional charm and a more reliable, modern construction.
