"A functional premium-class estate car with many options ticked on the equipment list, powered by the six-cylinder 528 engine offering excellent characteristics and performance of 193 hp. It has always been well cared for, driven sparingly, and remains in fine, road-ready condition."

Description

This wagon was first registered in Germany on March 26, 1997. In August 2000, it was registered for road use here in Sweden. The first Swedish owner kept the car until January 30 this year, when ownership was transferred to his wife. Over the past ten years, the car has covered approximately 9,000 km, and the current odometer reading is 129,710 km. Service and regular oil changes have been carried out by the owner.

Included with the car are protective floor mats, original documents such as the equipment list, owner’s manual, stamped service book from its time in Germany, and two keys.

The car was inspected on May 6 this year and is ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily and runs smoothly and quietly. Equipped with a battery disconnect switch. During a short test drive in a residential area, the steering, automatic gearbox, suspension components, and brakes all performed well.

Not inspected on a lift, but what could be seen appeared to be in good condition, and there were no remarks during the vehicle inspection. Rustproofed.

  • Interior condition

A fine and well-kept original beige interior with pleasant comfort and supportive front and rear seats. The door panels, trim, headliner, and carpets are all in excellent condition. The steering wheel, controls, gauges, and dashboard are likewise in fine shape. All electrical functions appear to work properly, including the integrated audio system and GPS.

The ACC climate control is functioning, although it is uncertain when it was last recharged. The sunroof works properly and seals tightly. The luggage compartment is in well-preserved original condition, and the rear window can be opened separately. Also included with the car is the distinctive cargo cover/shelf in fine condition.

  • Exterior condition

Nice and glossy, what appears to be original Vermont Green paintwork with normal wear consistent with its age and mileage. The glass, trim, emblems, and lighting details are in matching condition. Attractive wheels and good tires — everything feels functional and well maintained. The engine bay and luggage compartment are also in fine condition.

  • General condition

When the Touring model was introduced in the 5 Series, it received widespread praise for its design and practical usability as a premium-class estate car. This example is an excellent representative, with its attractive specification, appearance, history, and condition.

It is usually the extravagant coupés and high-performance versions that first achieve classic and enthusiast status, while everyday sedans and estate cars continue to be used and worn out. Then suddenly, these practical models disappear, and the well-preserved survivors attain the same status — while becoming even rarer sights at car meets and museums.

Here is the opportunity to secure a fine Touring version and stand out almost alone with it at this summer’s car gatherings.

Facts about the model

The fourth generation of BMW’s 5 Series was produced from 1995 to 2004. With its timeless design, excellent driving characteristics, and outstanding comfort, it holds a well-deserved place in automotive history — according to many, at the very top. For its era, it also offered a unique combination of mechanical feel and modern technology. The design of this beautiful estate car is credited to Joji Nagashima.

It was produced both as a four-door sedan and as a five-door estate, the Touring. The model also featured a high level of safety, including dual front airbags, side airbags, and it was one of the first estate cars equipped with “curtain airbags” along the side windows.

Petrol and diesel engines ranged from 150 hp to 286 hp, and as the crowning jewel there was the M5 version with a 5.0-liter V8 producing 400 hp. Over the years, the E39 model received numerous awards and accolades. According to reports, a total of 1,488,038 examples were produced, of which 266,209 were the five-door Touring version.
