Description

Originally sold new in Gothenburg in May 1956 to export manager Christian Pratt, this car has a rich and personal history. In 1960, the current owner's father took over the vehicle and kept a detailed driving log, allowing one to trace the car’s usage and repairs over the years.

It served as the family’s daily driver well into the early 1980s, with the two children riding in the small space behind the seats. It even made winter trips to Sälen—complete with eight pairs of skis strapped to a roof rack somehow mounted to a hardtop, which is no longer with the car.

Afterwards, an Austin Maxi took over daily duties, and the Simca became a cherished summer car.

The last inspection was performed on June 17, 2016, and since the car was within a valid inspection period when the new regulations came into effect on April 20, 2018, it is now exempt from further inspections.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

After a period of inactivity, it took a little time to get fuel to the pump during the documentation session, but once running, the engine performed nicely—with a distinct and assertive tone from what appears to be a period sport exhaust system.

Back in the car’s heyday, an upgraded engine known as the Rush was offered as an accessory. Having a Rush engine in your Simca signaled sportiness and enhanced performance.

According to unconfirmed family accounts, this particular car may indeed be fitted with a Rush engine—or possibly just the cylinder head. As it stands, no one knows for sure, but a knowledgeable enthusiast might be able to identify Rush components through a visual inspection.

  • Interior condition:

Nice interior featuring leather seats, good-quality carpets, and a handsomely patinated steering wheel. It appears that both the upholstery and carpets may have been replaced at some point.

  • Exterior condition:

An older repaint with some variation in door panel gaps, yet the car still presents a respectable exterior overall. Thanks to helpful contacts in France, the owner sourced a new soft top in 1997, which remains in fine and well-maintained condition to this day.

Original wire wheels are fitted with period-correct Michelin X tires that still have good tread. A set of older winter tires mounted on steel rims is also included.

  • General condition:

Continental European 1950s charm in a user-friendly and presentable condition—enhanced by a valuable set of documentation that forms an important part of the car’s history and deserves to be preserved with care.

Facts about the model

Simca (Société Industrielle de Mécanique et Carrosserie Automobile) was founded in 1934 with strong ties to Fiat. The 90 G Sport Cabriolet was based on the Simca Aronde—one of Simca’s most successful models during the 1950s. The 90 G Sport represented a more refined and sportier version, developed in collaboration with the renowned coachbuilder Facel-Métallon (which later became Facel Vega). Facel was responsible for the elegant and era-typical bodywork.

The car featured a 1.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, producing around 60 horsepower—delivering lively performance by the standards of its time. It was designed to appeal to customers seeking a sportier yet still comfortable mid-range car.

Production was very limited, and the model is now rare on the market. The 90 G Sport stands as a fine example of post-war France’s effort to blend Italian-inspired sportiness with French design and engineering.
