"A car with fine period-correct features. Mechanically sound, having undergone maintenance in recent years, though there are some cosmetic details—both exterior and interior—that could be improved for those who wish to refine it further."

Description

This vehicle was first registered on October 27, 1987, and sold by Göte Carlsson Bil in Gothenburg. It came with a generous selection of factory options, including R134 air conditioning, power windows front and rear, sunroof, armrest, ABS brakes, ASD differential lock, and a velour interior in crème beige. The exterior is finished in Paljettrot Metallic. The first owner also opted for a set of six Lorinser RS 16-inch wheels, custom painted in the car's body color. These wheels, including the two extras, are still with the car and were refinished in 2022 by the current owner.

The original steel wheels with hubcaps were also painted in the car’s color and used with winter tires—these are also included, although currently without tires, as the car hasn't been driven in winter for many years.

According to records, the car has been registered under the original owner's company, himself, and family members over the years.

The current owner—a vehicle technician and motor enthusiast—acquired the car in December 2020 from the first owner, who was a customer of his. He used the car as both a daily and enthusiast vehicle for about a year before it was mostly kept in storage.

In 2021, the head gasket (a common issue on these models) was replaced due to oil seeping into a coolant channel. The cylinder head was machined by a professional shop (receipt available). The car has since undergone substantial mechanical refurbishment, including:

New alternator

New belt kit

New ignition components

New expansion tank

New rear shock absorbers

New front shock absorbers with strut mounts

New front springs

All rear suspension arms replaced (except the control arms)

New support bearings and flex discs

New windshield installed by Ryds Bilglas in 2022

New OEM intake hose

New fuel injectors

New hood emblem

New crankcase ventilation hoses

New thermostat

New water pump

Engine cooling converted to electric fans

The car is equipped with a Pioneer stereo system featuring 4-inch speakers in the dashboard, 6.5-inch speakers in the rear shelf, and a small subwoofer in the trunk. A tow hitch is also fitted.

Included with the vehicle are the original owner's manual, various original documents, warranty card, and purchase agreement from the first owner. Two keys, various receipts, and inspection reports are also provided.

The car has recently been serviced and passed inspection.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and ran well in both engine and drivetrain. During a gentle test drive in a residential area, the steering, automatic transmission, handling, and brakes all functioned properly.

The car was not inspected on a lift, but the visible vital components appeared to be in good condition. A few photos of the underbody provided by the owner support this impression. No remarks from the official vehicle inspection (Bilprovning).

  • Interior condition:

Comfortable velour upholstery showing normal wear consistent with age and mileage. The seats and rear bench still offer good support and comfort. Door panels and trim are in good condition, though there is some lifting, notably on the rear driver-side door.

The headliner is in nice shape, and the original first aid kit is still present in the shelf compartment lid. The car is fitted with a more modern stereo.

Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all in good condition, with all electrical functions working properly.

The A/C system likely needs attention, as its functionality is uncertain. Floor mats are included for added protection.

  • Exterior condition:

Appears to be in original condition and finished in the color Pajettrot. However, the front fenders have been replaced and resprayed, with a slight difference in shade compared to the rest of the car. The paint is glossy, showing typical wear for its age and mileage, including a few dents, scratches, and stone chips.

The windshield is new, and the trim, emblems, and lighting components are in good condition, matching the overall exterior presentation.

Wheels and tires are in very good condition.

Both the engine bay and trunk are in typical condition for the car’s age, with some detachment of the sound insulation under the hood.

  • General condition:

A charming and well-equipped compact car that still retains much of its original Mercedes quality. While there are some cosmetic details that could benefit from attention, the vehicle is mechanically sound and in good running order.

With over 40 years behind it, this model now qualifies as a classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes W201 marked the manufacturer’s debut in the compact class, entering the market as a direct competitor to models like the BMW 3 Series. Produced between 1982 and 1993, it was introduced to the Swedish market as a 1984 model year.

The entry-level version featured a carbureted petrol engine paired with a four-speed gearbox. From model year 1986 onward, a catalytic converter was included.

The W201 was offered with both petrol and diesel engines. As always with Mercedes-Benz, safety was a high priority—even in this compact model. Features such as airbags, ABS brakes, seatbelt pre-tensioners, and a multi-link rear axle contributed to improved safety and road handling.

Over time, the W201 became a well-regarded and appreciated model, despite its initially steep price tag. In total, nearly 1.9 million units were produced.
