Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts and runs smoothly. During a gentle test drive on rural roads and through suburban areas, the car’s steering, handling, and brakes all appeared to function well.

However, the automatic transmission showed some issues—occasionally hesitating to upshift after starting off, though it functioned normally after a short while. Kickdown worked properly, indicating that a transmission inspection is recommended.

There was also a minor coolant leak. The water pump has already been replaced, so it’s likely coming from a hose connection or similar, which will need to be checked and addressed.

The car was not inspected on a lift, but all visible vital components appeared to be in good condition. No remarks were noted in the vehicle inspection (Bilprovning).

  • Interior condition:

Interior in original condition and well preserved. Seats offer good support and comfort, with a tidy headliner and quality carpets. Door panels are in good shape overall, though there is some lifting at the top of the rear door on the driver’s side.

The original first aid kit is still in place in the rear shelf compartment.

Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all in good condition. All electrical functions appear to be working, including the sunroof. However, the power antenna and central lock to the rear boot is not operational.

The A/C system has been serviced but may require a refill. The radio unit is functional.

  • Exterior condition:

The car appears to have its original paintwork, which is in good condition with normal wear consistent with age and mileage. The glass is generally in good shape, with a minor stone chip in the windshield.

Chrome, trim, emblems, and lighting components are all in good condition. The wheels are in good shape and fitted with Michelin tires. A tow hitch is installed.

Both the engine bay and trunk area are well kept. Note that the sound insulation under the hood is missing.

  • General condition:

There are car models that, until recently, were a common sight on the roads but are now rapidly disappearing. Mercedes’ compact model W201 has, in the blink of an eye, already surpassed 40 years.

Here is a solid example that needs some attention and care, but once sorted, offers a great blend of functionality and simplicity—with a touch of flair, proudly wearing its Mercedes star up front.

It is now more than qualified to continue its journey as a classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes W201 marked the brand’s entry into the compact class, positioned as a challenger to models such as the BMW 3 Series. It was produced between 1982 and 1993 and arrived in Sweden as the 1984 model year. The base version came with a carbureted petrol engine and a four-speed manual gearbox. From the 1986 model year onward, it was equipped with a catalytic converter.

The W201 was offered with both petrol and diesel engines. As always with Mercedes-Benz, safety was a key priority—even in this compact segment. Features such as airbags, ABS brakes, and seatbelt pre-tensioners were available, along with a multi-link rear axle that enhanced handling and stability.

Over time, the model gained appreciation, even though its price was considered quite high when new. Nearly 1.9 million units were produced in total.
