"A truly fun and sought-after vehicle that spent most of its life in ambulance and rescue service duty. Generously equipped with a powerful engine and an abundance of extra equipment."

Description

This car was originally delivered new in Trollhättan. It left the factory in white but was immediately repainted and converted into an emergency response vehicle for the local ambulance service. It served there for approximately four years before being sold to the municipality of Överkalix, where it was re-striped and put into service with the fire department as a command vehicle. The green ambulance graphics were replaced with the fire department’s red livery.
The current owner purchased the car in February 2023 through KVD car auctions as a repair project. The only issue requiring attention was a faulty starter motor. The car has been exceptionally well maintained, with a fully stamped service book. There are still a few things that could be addressed if desired.
Included with the car are:

Original blue light bar without control unit
Skid plate
Cup holder
Interior emergency light for the windshield
New gloss black dashboard along with matching interior door trim strips
New original shutter for the gear selector
New sealing strip for the driver’s door
(see photos)

Photos also document the car’s extensive equipment specification. It comes with a remarkable amount of special equipment, such as reinforced engine power take-off, upgraded suspension, and much more.

A fun little accessory included with the car is an exact toy-car replica of the vehicle itself.

Complete documentation accompanies the car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Technically, everything functions as it should, with one small exception. The car’s gear selector is somewhat sensitive and slightly loose on certain occasions. This can result in the car not starting. The issue is easily resolved by moving the gear selector slightly by hand, and it is likely a fault that can be repaired without much difficulty.

The car is fitted with tires from 2018 with good tread depth and no signs of dry cracking.

  • Interior condition

A number of screw holes are present in the panels, which can easily be addressed by installing the new dashboard and cup holder. Fine leather-trimmed seat surfaces throughout. Three speakers are mounted in the headliner.

  • Exterior condition

On the outside, the car shines in bright summer yellow. The paintwork has a very nice finish, with no damage other than the occasional minor stone chip. There is, however, one exception here as well: a small paint blemish/dent is present on one of the doors.

  • General condition

An all-around solid Saab 9-5 that has been well cared for and properly maintained. Considering its condition, this is a car with many enjoyable miles still ahead of it. Do you dare to stand out in its bright summer-yellow color?

Facts about the model

Brief History and Background

The Saab 9-5 was introduced as a passenger car in 1997 as the first generation model and was available both as a sedan and an estate version known as the SportCombi. The second generation was launched around 2010.

In Sweden and other Nordic countries, the Saab 9-5 was widely used as the basis for various ambulance and emergency response vehicle conversions during the 2000s. It primarily served as a rapid response or light emergency vehicle rather than as a full-scale ambulance for stretcher transport.

Most emergency-response versions were built on the estate/SportCombi model due to its generous cargo space, although sedans were also occasionally used for fast-response teams.

Why the Saab 9-5 Was Chosen for Emergency Use
Driving characteristics and performance: The turbocharged engines provided strong acceleration for rapid emergency response.
Comfort and ergonomics: Saab had long been known for excellent driver ergonomics, important during long emergency shifts.
Safety: The models featured multiple airbags, ABS brakes, and stability control systems — all essential in emergency-service environments.
Adaptability: The estate body style offered ample room for equipment, storage modules, stretchers, and mobile medical equipment installations.
Nordic climate suitability: Many vehicles were specially configured for harsh Scandinavian weather conditions.
Typical Modifications and Equipment
Installation of emergency lights, sirens, radio systems, and communication equipment.
Interior modules for stretchers, carrying chairs, oxygen systems, first-aid equipment, and defibrillators.
Reinforced electrical systems with additional batteries and relays for medical equipment.
In some cases, raised roofs or specially designed storage cabinets in the rear cargo area.
Typical Areas of Use
Rapid response vehicles for doctors and nurses to reach emergency scenes quickly.
Mobile physician or specialist response teams.
Light transport of patients or medical equipment when required.
