"Another one of those well-preserved original cars that has seen little use and has been lovingly cared for by enthusiastic and knowledgeable owners. There’s something special about sitting behind the wheel of a Volvo 240. Just hop in, start it up, and let yourself be moved… Though a timing belt replacement is recommended."

Description

This vehicle was first registered for road use on January 31, 1992. The current owner, a car enthusiast, acquired it on September 20, 2019. He has personally maintained it with regular oil and fluid changes, and the car comes with a full service history. It has been used purely as an enthusiast’s vehicle—an honor it shares with the owner’s other garage-kept classics, where it has spent most of its time.

The odometer reads 107,230 km, with only about 10,000 km driven in the past 10 years.

It is equipped with a tow bar (new, installed in 2018 and of the swiveling type), turbine wheels, an engine block heater, and an outlet for a cabin heater. The original Volvo radio is still in place with speakers in the front doors, and the car has also been fitted with a tachometer and a temperature gauge as optional extras.

Included with the car are the owner's manual, a completed service booklet, several inspection reports, receipts, and a Carfax report from 2019. Comes with two sets of keys. Inspected and ready to drive.

  • Mechanical condition:

Started easily and ran smoothly and pleasantly. During a short and uneventful test drive at moderate pace, the steering, clutch, gearbox, handling, brakes, and other systems all appeared to function well.

The car has not been inspected on a lift, but everything visible looked to be in good condition. Rustproofed, with inner fenders also installed in the rear wheel arches. No remarks from the vehicle inspection authority.

  • Interior condition:

Nicely preserved original interior in plush upholstery with clean textile floor mats and protective rubber mats. Door panels, trim, and headliner are all in very good condition. Comfortable and "unsat" seating feel. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in great and fully functional condition. Working radio.

  • Exterior condition:

Glossy and well-kept paintwork in Atlantic Blue (605), appears to be entirely original. Glass, chrome, trim, rubber/plastic parts, and lighting details are all in nicely preserved original condition. There is a small scuff on the front bumper. Tow bar in good shape. Attractive turbine wheels fitted with new Kumho tires—some slight oxidation noted on the front left rim. Engine bay and luggage compartment are in well-preserved original condition. Spare wheel/tire is unused and in original condition.

Owner's comment

Ever since getting my driver’s license and owning my first car—a Ford Sunliner back in the mid-1950s—enthusiast vehicles have held a special place in my automotive heart. Over the years, it's primarily been American, German, and Swedish cars. I searched long and hard for a well-preserved, original Volvo 240 and have truly enjoyed owning it, but now it's time to scale back and reduce the size of my collection.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 140, updated in 1975 to become the 240 series, is a true icon of the Swedish national identity. Whether it was a ride home from the hospital in a taxi, family trips to IKEA, or weekend getaways with grandparents to the countryside—almost all of us have some connection to these cars.

Over the years, the model underwent numerous updates and variations. When the new 740 was launched in 1984, many thought the “old” 240 had reached the end of the road. But Volvo had other plans and continued to refine and develop the 240.

Different engines were introduced over time—petrol, diesel, and even turbocharged versions. It came in two-, four-, and five-door body styles. There were various trim levels, ranging from sporty and luxurious to the most genuine and down-to-earth versions—perhaps best embodied by the DL and GL models, staples of the Swedish welfare state.

Originally, the GL was positioned as a more upscale version, but over time it was downgraded to the entry-level model. From 1981 onward, it came equipped with the B23A engine.

There were certainly faster and flashier cars on the market, but few could match the Volvo 240's unique combination of simplicity, durability, quality, and safety—making it the quintessential no-nonsense family car.

By the 1988 model year, the GL had become the base model, now equipped with a catalytic converter. In total, over 2.8 million Volvo 240s were produced. And even now, more than 30 years since the model was discontinued, they can still be seen on the roads—testament to their enduring legacy.
