Land Rover 109 PU Brandbil — 1964

Solid 109 with a great fire service history, which often means low mileage—and that’s certainly the case here, with just 41,700 km on the clock. In addition, it comes from a knowledgeable and experienced owner of the model, ensuring it has been well cared for.

Description

The vehicle was most likely delivered to Nyköping Fire Department in September 1964, where it remained in service until 1991. At that point, it was acquired by the Gnesta Fire Brigade, primarily for use in forest fire operations. For that reason, they applied to the County Administrative Board for exemption from road tax. Even there, it didn’t accumulate many kilometers, although the engine may have logged more running hours than driving hours—for example, when powering the pump during firefighting work.

In 2007, the municipality of Gnesta sold the fire truck to a private individual who mainly used it on his property, driving it unregistered within the grounds. The current owner purchased the vehicle in 2013, at just over 25,000 km, and carried out the latest—and final—technical inspection on May 18, 2017. It passed inspection just before the new exemption rules took effect on April 20, 2018.

Included with the vehicle are numerous original firefighting accessories (see photos), as well as a large general spare parts package (see photos).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine has received regular maintenance, and the owner has also removed and thoroughly cleaned the oil pan. In addition, the carburetor has been refurbished with an ultrasonic cleaning and fitted with new gaskets and O-rings. The transfer case gasket has been replaced, along with the axle shaft seals. Relatively new tires with good tread were mounted in 2018—including the spare.

  • Interior condition:

New and well-preserved seats from a later 1970s model, which still blend in nicely with the overall look—while offering significantly improved comfort. Charming details and vintage decals serve as reminders of the vehicle’s service to the community.

  • Exterior condition:

Red fire department paint over the original gray factory finish, much of which has faded—especially on the upper surfaces and the left side of the vehicle. According to the current owner, this is the result of natural sun-bleaching, particularly from the years spent on the farm. Regardless, it gives the vehicle an even stronger utility vibe: working the land and fighting fires in the heat of summer—so to speak. The roof-mounted rotating beacon and searchlight both work well, as does the loud original Sonabel siren.

  • General condition:

A Land Rover classic in beautifully patinated condition, with virtually all of its original firefighting equipment preserved—plus a number of added details and accessories fitted later on. In other words, a real treasure trove for the fire engine enthusiast.

Facts about the model

In truth, both older and newer Land Rovers might just be the ultimate environmentally friendly vehicles. For 68 years, they were built using largely the same tooling, without consuming vast resources on advanced development. It’s said that around 80% of all Land Rovers ever made are still running and in use today. From that perspective, it becomes easier to see how a vehicle like this—despite its age and traditional design—can very much be described with today’s environmental buzzword: sustainable.
