Description

The first owner acquired this car in June 1997, making it his third car. First a new Beetle, then in the transition between the 60s and 70s, a new Amazon. When he, as a newly retired person, decided to purchase another new car, he splurged and treated himself to some extras. Options included the SE package with all comfort and sport equipment, as well as the Business package with air conditioning (ACC), Volvo Guard alarm, cruise control, and cabin filter. Additionally, it came with a Volvo radio with a cassette player, Dp-550 with detachable front (Radio Pass included), Volvo rubber mats, and an electric engine heater with a retractable front intake. Always serviced at Bilia, according to Volvo's service recommendations. The timing belt was replaced in 2005 and 2018. It has been driven mostly during the bright half of the year. The car has been stored in the garage since 2019 and is now being sold by the son-in-law.
The car has been thoroughly inspected and approved on April 12th.
Included with the car is an original roof rack from Volvo, unpacked in its original box.
Winter tires with hubcaps and wheel bolts are also included. Jack, warning triangle, battery charger, ignition timing lamp, test instrument, and fire extinguisher are also provided. Additionally, brochures, instruction and service manuals, and a folder with receipts and notes are included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in the engine and drivetrain. All functions such as steering, clutch, shifting, and brakes operated smoothly and flawlessly. New alternator installed. Not inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen, everything looked good. During the last inspection, the car received praise.

  • Interior condition:

The interior (San Remo plush/leather, light beige 3360) is in exquisite original condition. It has had a seat cover since new. The seats, rear bench, door panels, dashboard, headliner, and carpets are all very well-preserved in their original condition. Likewise, the instrumentation and steering wheel. Food and drink restrictions have been in place. All electrical components and the radio work well, although the ACC system should be checked.

  • Exterior condition:

The original paint (Midnight Blue solid 604) is in very good condition, with some minor color scuffs on the bumpers and slight door edge wear. Due to the car being parked for a while, there are "wash marks" primarily on flat surfaces (hood, roof, and rear hatch). A detailing/polishing should bring the paint up to the same level as the rest of the car. Glass, plastic, rubber, and chrome are also in very good condition. There is a slight hint of rust in one front turn signal fixture. Nice aluminum wheels "Antila" with new (0323) Nokian summer tires in the front. In the rear, there are nice but older (0510) Michelin tires. The original radio antenna is not included in the pictures, but it is available and included.

  • General condition:

Just recently a common sight on our roads, but suddenly they're gone, especially in this fine original condition. A modern classic, with over 25 years since production. In this excellent original condition, with abundant equipment for its time, it's now time for it to transition from a daily driver to an enthusiast's car. The history and condition of this particular car are also a testament to the motto: Volvo's value endures.

Facts about the model

With the model 850, Volvo ushered in a new era. After 65 years of rear-wheel-drive cars, it was finally time for front-wheel drive. There were many other innovations in the new model as well, such as: a completely new engine, a five-cylinder transverse engine layout, the new delta-link rear axle, side-impact protection system (SIPS), self-adjusting front seatbelts, and more.

It was a massive investment for its time, estimated at 16 billion when the model was completed and presented in 1991. In addition to maintaining core values such as quality and safety, Volvo moved upscale towards the premium class and acquired a much more modern and sporty image.

It was in 1978 that PG Gyllenhammar pressed the start button for the Galaxy project. Designed by Jan Vilsgaard, it stood there on the podium at the premiere in Globen on June 11, 1991, and the entire automotive world was amazed. Between 1992 and 1996, new variants constantly emerged, initially based on a four-door body, and later in 1993, following Volvo's tradition, a five-door Estate. They even used this body for racing - all for good PR and brand positioning. Volvo succeeded in this endeavor - while calm and safe versions retained the old customer base, everything from Turbo to all-wheel drive in flashy colors and lavish interiors also attracted new customer groups. From the model year 1997, the 850 was replaced by a significantly updated version in Volvo's new model strategy, the S70 and V70. The design became "softer" with a new front and interior. Production continued until 2000 when it was replaced by the S60 model.
