"A classic Saab 96 in a rally setup ready to drive."

Description

The man who built this rally car did so on an almost rust-free body. The engine is built according to Saab's Group 2 specifications. The car is equipped with, among other things, an XP pipe, a four-speed SP2 gearbox with a 7/38 final drive. The car had only competed in one race, about four kilometers long in Falsterbo, when it was sold to the current owner. The Saab was intended as a complement to the other two rally two-strokes that the current owner competed with. The vehicle logbook is included with the car and is valid until 2031, see picture.

Facts about the model

he Saab 96 was introduced on February 17, 1960, as a further development of the Saab 93. It continued to be manufactured until January 1980. Over the years, Saab continuously improved the car step by step. The Saab 96 became one of the most common and beloved cars in Swedish households. The car acquired many nicknames over the years, including "Djungeltrumma" (jungle drum), "ägghalva" (egg half), and "Trollhättemoped." The handling of the Saab 96 impressed as a rally car. In 1962, Erik Carlsson won the prestigious Rally Monte Carlo "on the roof" with a Saab 96 equipped with a 55 horsepower two-stroke engine. He repeated his feat the following year, winning the rally again in 1963.

The first major change to the Saab 96 came in 1965 when an entirely new, longer front replaced the older, blunter front. Modern Saab enthusiasts often refer to these different periods as "trubbnos" (blunt nose) or "långnos" (long nose). In 1966, the Saab V-4 engine was ready to be introduced. Saab decided to make a lavish farewell to the two-stroke era. They renamed their top-of-the-line model the Saab Sport to "Monte Carlo" as a tribute to Erik Carlsson "on the roof."

The Monte Carlo 1966 had a two-stroke engine of 841 cc with triple carburetors and separate oil lubrication. It featured disc brakes at the front and a four-speed gearbox. The interior was sporty with headrests for the navigator, a wooden sports steering wheel, a tachometer, and a built-in clock with a second hand. The rear seat was a simpler version with plenty of space in special storage compartments at the bottom for rally equipment such as spare parts and snow chains (see the pictures).
