Volkswagen Golf V6 4-Motion Highline 2,8 24V — 2002

The fastest Golf until 2002. Sharpest engine, stiff chassis, powerful brakes, six-speed gearbox, and sport interior as standard. Here’s an unusually fine example with a single owner until 2024. Well-maintained in original condition and fun to drive with true all-wheel drive.

Description

The car was ordered in the spring of 2001 and delivered by VW-Norrlands Bil in Skellefteå in September to its first owner, a woman from Skellefteå (now 64 years old), who kept the car for 23 years. She was an accountant and particularly fond of the Golf model. When the top-of-the-line version was released—with a 6-cylinder engine producing 204 hp and all-wheel drive—she ordered a brand-new, fully equipped car just the way she wanted it: silver with the Highline package, CD stereo, center armrest, tow bar, and engine block heater. The car was built for the Swedish market, featuring an upgraded heating system, electric mirrors, and heated seats.

It has always been garage-kept and serviced strictly according to schedule. All invoices, documents, and inspection reports are neatly organized in the included binder (it’s noted that the car cost twice as much as the most basic VW Golf model at the time).

The latest service was done in August 2024, at 172,000 km. Last summer, the car was sold to its current owner—a VW enthusiast from Sweden’s west coast—who began ownership by driving it from Skellefteå as far north as possible (to Nordkapp), then south on winding Norwegian roads, all the way home to Uddevalla—a 4,500 km journey. The car is an absolute joy to drive, especially on twisty roads. It holds the road like an iron and is impressively responsive when overtaking. It is now being sold to make room for a new car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Same chassis and brakes as the R32 model that was released the following year. Excellent engine and gearbox. A lot of driving pleasure. A well-maintained and technically sound example with no faults.

  • Interior condition:

Well-kept interior with comfortable original sport seats. Highline trim with Climatronic, cruise control, wood accents, and more. Minor wear on the passenger seat cushion—possibly from a child seat? See photos. Clean engine bay and trunk.

  • Exterior condition:

Straight and clean body. The car has been driven in a salt-free climate. The seller guarantees that the car has not been in any accidents and that the mileage is accurate. Original paint throughout, except for the left rear door, which was repainted due to scratches. The rear bumper has some cracking in the paint on the right-hand side—see photo—as well as a small crack in the taillight lens on the same side.

The sills have a few touch-ups where the mud flaps meet the body. Otherwise, the paint is unusually well preserved. The central locking on the tailgate only works if the hatch is properly closed—likely just needs adjustment. The mirror glass shows some oxidation along the lower edge—see photos.

  • General condition:

A wolf in sheep’s clothing. The Golf IV is considered by many to be the most elegantly designed Golf model. Here is a car with performance and handling, built not only for high-speed cruising on the Autobahn but also for winding winter roads.

Over time, it’s likely to gain the same collector appeal as the early Golf GTI models—and the driving pleasure comes included.

Interestingly, this car is approved to tow 1,500 kg with a trailer, despite weighing just under 1,400 kg itself.

Facts about the model

The Golf IV, produced from 1997 to 2003, is often referred to as a style icon. By this point, the model had matured into a premium car, featuring refined design details and an upscale interior. It was also available with six-cylinder engines producing up to 204 hp (2002) and 241 hp (2003).

With its timeless design, elegant lines, and high build quality, well-preserved Golf IVs are destined to become future collector’s cars. The engine sound of the larger six-cylinder versions is a delight in itself—no radio needed.
