Description

This car was first registered for road use on January 7, 1986. It features a manual gearbox—relatively rare, but ideal for a driver with sportier ambitions who wanted to fully enjoy BMW’s renowned driving dynamics. It also came factory-equipped with a limited-slip differential.

The current owner, a motoring enthusiast with several classics in the garage, took over stewardship on December 5, 2018. The previous owner had enhanced the driving experience with 635 springs and yellow Koni shock absorbers, and it’s also fitted with a sports exhaust system.

Originally delivered with BMW’s TRX wheels and TRX tires. It also comes with studless winter wheels mounted on BMW OEM rims. At the most recent inspection, the only issue noted was cracked tires due to age—they will need replacing. Otherwise, the car is ready to drive.

Includes two sets of keys and the original owner’s manual with partially completed service booklet. A binder with various receipts and documents is also included. In recent years, significant care has been taken, including a thorough check and service of core functions as well as brake system refurbishment.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and the engine runs smoothly and steadily. During a gentle test drive, everything appeared to function well—steering, handling, clutch, gear changes, and brakes all performed as they should.

For a 40-year-old car, it feels surprisingly modern and comfortable.
It has not been inspected on a lift, but the visible vital components underneath appeared to be in good condition, with no remarks from the vehicle inspection.

  • Interior condition:

Nice original interior with good support in the front and rear seats. Some wear is visible on the driver's seat at the entry point, but otherwise, the upholstery, carpets, panels, and headliner are well preserved. The wood trim is also in good condition and adds a tasteful touch.

The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all in good shape. The onboard computer and other electrical functions appear to be working well. The A/C system has been checked and addressed but may require a recharge—its current function is uncertain. The sunroof and other comfort-related electrical features are working properly. The stereo needs to be recoded or replaced.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice and glossy, seemingly original paintwork with typical signs of use consistent with the car’s age and mileage. New window seals have been fitted. The glass, trim, emblems, and lighting elements are all in good condition for their age and use. The mirror housings are slightly dull, and the right rear bumper’s rubber trim is dry and should be replaced. Tires show signs of dry cracking. Both the engine bay and trunk are in standard, functional condition for a well-kept driver.

  • General condition:

A luxury car where the first owner—and later drivers—clearly prioritized driving pleasure and performance, combined with the comfort and technology of its time. Many boxes were ticked on the options list, reflecting thoughtful choices. While there are some details to address and review, the low mileage, limited number of enthusiastic owners, and the car’s condition and appearance make this a fine classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model

When BMW introduced its large and luxurious 7 Series in 1977, it was technically very similar to the sportier 6 Series. The first models launched were the 728, 730, and 733i, followed later by additional variants. The 7 Series was advanced for its time—in 1979 it became the world’s first car to feature both electronic fuel injection and electronic ignition. Following the Mercedes S-Class, it was also one of the first cars available with ABS brakes.

The 733i, with its 3.2-liter inline-six and fuel injection, was produced until 1982. However, production of the top-of-the-line models—the 735i and 745i—continued until 1986. The 735i (6-cylinder, 3430 cm³) delivered strong performance with 218 hp, 0–100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, and a top speed of 217 km/h.

In total, 285,029 units of the E23 model were produced between 1977 and 1986. In the fall of 1986, it was succeeded by the E32 generation.
