"A stylish car where everything appears to function as intended and as one would expect. The entire vehicle is in good condition with wear consistent with its age and mileage. There are some details that could use attention, and the history is not fully complete—but that said, it’s a well-priced and exclusive car that carries the brand’s aura and sense of quality."

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs well, with a slight ticking sound from the engine. During a gentle test drive in an industrial area, the steering, automatic transmission, and brakes all functioned well. Under heavier acceleration, the power was definitely there. Handling and other systems also appeared to work well, considering the car’s age and mileage.

It hasn’t been inspected on a lift, but the visible vital components and details appeared to be in good condition.

  • Interior condition:

Original interior with firm seat support and nicely patinated leather showing normal wear. Likewise, the door panels, trim, and carpets are well maintained. The wooden details are in similarly good condition. Steering wheel, controls, gauges, and electrical functions all appear to work well. The AC system may need attention. Rubber seals are in good condition.

  • Exterior condition:

Paintwork is in good condition with normal wear. Glass, chrome, emblems, trim, and lighting components are all in similarly good shape. The wheels are not original but are in good condition with quality tires. The hardtop is well-preserved and its mechanisms function properly.

The soft top has been replaced and is in good condition, though slightly wrinkled and dusty from lack of use—it will likely improve with cleaning and being left up. The electric operation works as it should. The roll bar is in good condition and its electric raising/lowering function operates properly as well.

Both the engine bay and trunk are in good condition. The sound-deadening mat under the hood has some damage.

  • General condition:

Recently entered the classic car stage and carries its years with pride. The quality typical of Mercedes is both visible and tangible. Most of the technology and electrical functions appear to work well, and the overall condition is good. A well-priced luxury car with sporty ambitions, now joining the ranks of SL classics and enthusiast vehicles—here with all the extras.

Facts about the model

That both the epithets Super and Sport were featured in the 1930s Mercedes SSKL – Super Sport Kompressor Leicht from 1931 – is a well-known fact. However, whether the postwar Mercedes designation SL stands for Super Leicht or Sport Leicht depends on whom you ask in the history of Mercedes.

What we do know is that the new 300 SL race car with its iconic gullwing doors, introduced in 1952, eventually gave rise to a more civilized road version, produced from 1954 to 1957. When that model was phased out, Mercedes instead introduced an open-top roadster with similar performance and styling, produced from 1957 to 1963.

At the same time, Mercedes also offered a more restrained and modest SL variant—the R121 Mercedes 190 SL, manufactured from 1955 to 1963. When it came time to replace both models, Mercedes opted for a single successor: the W113 Mercedes 230 SL, also known as the Pagoda. Over the years, it was offered as the 250 SL and later the 280 SL, produced from 1963 to 1971.

In April 1971, the Pagoda's successor was introduced: the R107 Mercedes 350 SL, powered by a 3.5-liter V8 engine producing 200 hp. Both safety and handling saw major improvements over its predecessor. This model remained in production with only minor updates until 1989, when the next generation—R129—was launched.

The new SL model was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1988 and entered production in May of the same year. The design was credited to Bruno Sacco. Officially designated as a 1989 model, the R129 was produced until the 2002 model year. As with any new Mercedes model, it represented a significant step forward. In addition to nodding back to the legendary Gullwing, Mercedes sought to lead in both cutting-edge technology and exclusive design.

They also emphasized that the new SL united Mercedes’ DNA—blending the performance of a roadster, the luxury of a coupé, and the security of a sedan. What had once seemed an impossible combination—a sleek sports car that offered both performance and comfort along with the highest standards of safety—was now made possible with the new SL. At least, according to the brand’s own words in the first brochure for the model. The brochure concludes: “Here, tradition meets innovation. Safety meets comfort. All at a high—indeed, incomparable—level.”

The first models released were the 300 SL-24 and the 500 SL. Over the years, the lineup expanded to include inline-sixes, V6s, V8s, and V12s. A facelift arrived for the 1994 model year, followed by another in 1996, and yet another update for 1999. Both major and minor technical upgrades continued through the end of production in 2002, when the R129 was succeeded by the R230.

A total of 213,089 R129 models were produced.
