"This 50-year-old car received plenty of care and was lovingly used for many years. After a period of dormancy, it has now been awakened and put back into operation. A delightful road companion and mileage eater, it now needs various repairs and care to once again stand as the "King of the road" as it did in its former glory days. That, and the classic color combination of silver with blue interior and wood accents, are enticing."

Description

This car was registered as new in Sweden on March 21, 1974. The current owner's family bought it three years later in March 1977. It was carefully and lovingly used, primarily serving as a wonderful vacation vehicle for long trips down to Europe. The son recounts that his father never wanted to stop driving; he enjoyed long days behind the wheel. Sometime over 30 years ago, the car was repainted in its original color. It was retired early, with the last inspection conducted on May 9, 1997, and taken off the road on November 5, 1997. The current odometer reading is 82,198 kilometers. From the inspection records that accompany the car, it can be seen that the odometer has "turned over" once, indicating that the car has traveled 18,220 kilometers between the years 1977 and 1997. Since then, it has been standing both indoors and outdoors, under cover. The latter has resulted in some moisture affecting the interior. Now, the car has been started up for sale and test-driven but should be transported by a carrier. Workshop manuals are included with the car. In addition to the standard equipment, the car has a tow hitch.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts easily and runs, but it's a bit stubborn when accelerating. Since the car has been stationary for a long time, it needs an inspection and some work. The exhaust system is leaking and needs to be replaced. Smooth and stable handling during test driving at a moderate pace. Shifting, clutch, and braking performance are good. Not inspected underneath on a lift, which seems reasonable given what could be seen, but there are signs of rust.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in original condition with signs of use and storage wear. Seats, door panels, carpets, and headliner are intact. There are some moisture and pressure marks that should be possible to refinish. The steering wheel and instrumentation also show age-related wear. There's a small crack in the padding on the dashboard and a missing button for the heating/ventilation, as well as part of the center console missing. The sunroof (manual) is stuck; we left it as is to avoid damaging the mechanism. It should be opened gently and probably lubricated.

  • Exterior condition:

It has been repainted, and the paint is in decent condition, but there are some spray filler spots in a few areas and "runs" from the repainting process. There are also scratches on the roof, small dents, and abrasions. The substrate is somewhat uncertain at the door sills and wheel arches. Nothing that has occurred since repainting, but likely during the preparation process. Missing waistline moldings, sills and wheel arch moldings, and rear emblems. Glass and rubber are in reasonable condition with signs of use and aging. Aftermarket rims are in decent condition, as are the tires, but they are old. Engine and luggage compartments show signs of wear.

  • General condition:

This was a stylish and trendsetting vehicle back in the 70s. Its engine, drivetrain, handling, and sporty image in a beautifully designed executive car impressed back then and still do today. Now, it has half a century behind it and is a classic in automotive history. It needs care and attention, but for a new owner, it has the potential to become a truly delightful enthusiast and collector's vehicle.

Facts about the model

After BMW restarted production after World War II, they offered a wide range of cars, from motorcycles to small cars, large luxury vehicles, and sports cars. In the early 1960s, they began to refine their lineup, and the Neu Klasse, a larger mid-size car with a sleek and spacious body, modern design, and technology, became successful. By the mid-1960s, BMW realized the need for a slightly smaller car to meet the demands of the growing middle class. They derived a smaller two-door version from their successful Neu Klasse, called the 02 series.

As BMW's fortunes improved, they gained the capability to develop a new model one step up the ladder. After the BMW 501/502 (Baroque Angel), the E3 series marked the manufacturer's comeback in the larger class, also known as the Grosse Klasse domestically. It was introduced in the fall of 1968 and was produced until the 1978 model year.

Under the hood sat a six-cylinder engine, developed from the four-cylinder, with much of the technology reused from the four-cylinder siblings. This meant they were considered to have more "driving pleasure" than the main competitor Mercedes' more traditional cars at that time. The new BMW cars were designated 2500, 2800, 3.0, and 3.3 depending on the size of the engines. In the early years, it was the 2500/2800 with twin carburetors that prevailed.

At the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, an upgraded engine, the 3.0 S, was introduced, and later that year, a 3.0 Si with a Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection system. For the 1976 model year, it was replaced with a more modern Bosch L-Jetronic system. With fuel injection, acceleration to 100 km/h was a bit faster, and the top speed was higher, 7.8 seconds and 211 km/h. The advantage of fuel injection was also lower fuel consumption.

Customers could order cars with simpler equipment and up the value chain to pure luxury cars. They also became more luxurious during the manufacturing period. Both the 2800 and later the 3.0 and 3.3 versions were available in an extended L version. In the US, the E3 model was called the Bavaria with some differences from the "European" versions.

In total, about 190,000 units of the E3 series were produced, of which about 72,000 were for the American market.

A little anecdote, not too flattering, was that these powerful cars became popular even among shady individuals. Countless cars were stolen and used, for example, in bank robberies. It is said that the police, especially with the sedan model, were on alert when thefts occurred. Something was brewing. In Germany, it was jokingly called the Baader-Meinhof Wagen, as the Red Army Faction in the 1970s often "borrowed" these for quick getaways after bank robberies and other actions.

The coupe version, model E9, built from 1968 to 1975 on a shortened E3 platform, shared much of the technology and design details with the E3 series.
