"A classic Amazon in California White paintwork and red interior, all in very good original condition."

Description

The car was originally purchased by a principal in Ånge, born in 1903, in November 1969. He used the car very sparingly, eventually leaving it unused and it fell out of the register. A son took over ownership and re-registered it in 2002, with documentation available. It was hardly driven but properly inspected and roadworthy again in September 2009, at 7,400 miles. The second owner was an enthusiastic collector of cars, mopeds, bicycles, and curiosities, primarily from the 60s and 70s. The California white (color code 42) Amazon has been part of their collection for 13 years and is largely in its original condition. All service and work carried out during this time are noted in a small black notebook, which comes with the car, as well as the service booklet, instruction manual, and other documentation. It is currently fitted with 5.5-inch steel rims and good quality Goodyear tires, as well as a 2-inch exhaust system. A functioning Blaupunkt Wiesbaden radio with instruction booklet is mounted and included, as well as a nice Volvo blanket.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in the engine. Everything appears to be working well. Undercarriage not checked on lift but condition looks good.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in good original condition. The front and rear seats have custom covers, which have not been removed during inspections, but are believed to have been there since new, to protect the original upholstery and for added comfort. The headliner is in good condition but has a hole on the driver's side. The dashboard is in fine condition. The rubber mats have some patina.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork appears to be partially in its original condition, but the front section with the bumper, hood, and fenders has been repainted. Some areas of the body edges and rear wheel arches have been touched up and may need further inspection. The glass and chrome are in good condition, but the front bumper has some minor damage on the driver's side. The 5.5-inch steel wheels and tires are in great condition. The engine and trunk areas are in excellent condition, with only minor damage to the rubber matting around the edges of the trunk.

  • General condition:

A lovely car and a "time capsule" from the last year of production with nice accessories such as wheels, exhaust system, and a radio in the right period style. This is how many people wanted their Amazon to look in the early 70s. Largely in original condition and well-maintained and taken care of over the years.

Facts about the model

It has been written many columns about the Amazon, one of our most beloved classic cars. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard with Italian influences and Volvo's answer to the "pontoon" body style that became the hallmark of the 1950s. Produced from 1956 to 1970, with model years from 1957 to 1970. The 1959 model year was the world's first mass-produced car with a three-point seat belt in the front as standard.
The bulletproof B18 engine with 75 hp was introduced in the 1962 model year. For the 1965 model year, there were some changes with a new grille, new seats and interior, as well as "hole" rims and new hubcaps.
For the 1969 model year, an even larger engine was introduced, the B20A with 2.0 liters and 82 hp DIN in the "regular" 121 model. Improved and safer brakes, as well as a lot of upgrades from the 140 model, but also some limitations such as the removal of the chrome from the drip rails and hood. There were no major changes or development steps in the last production year.
For the 1970 model year, adjustable headrests became standard on all markets, previously an option, as well as three-point seat belts in the back. The last Amazon was built on July 3, 1970, in Torslanda.
So, when the 70s arrived, the Amazon was retired after 14 model years and 667,332 units produced. Two, four or five doors, and available in standard versions, as well as Sport and GT versions. A Swedish icon and motor history.
