"The sound, heritage, stubbornness and pronounced sportiness make this model the optimal Saab for many."

Description

The current owner's father bought the car in the 1960s, drove it for a few years, and then stored it in the garage. It was never registered in the new registry when it was introduced in 1973, but was renovated over several years in the 1980s and 1990s and was re-registered in the summer of 1996. The sports car has been sparingly used since the renovation, perhaps only a few hundred miles in the last 30 years. The current owner says that his father did not have the opportunity to share much of the car's history before he passed away in 2019. However, he knows for sure that his father had owned the car since the mid-1960s and that it had always been in Ljungsbro, outside Linköping.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine sounds pleasant and lively, and the box feels good both with and without the freewheel engaged. Shifting with freewheel without clutch works fine with good engine sound and proper handling. The whole car has a solid and good mechanical feel to it.

  • Interior condition

Correct furnishing with a bit of wear and patina that gives a clear impression of being original. Skirting boards and carpets express the same feeling, and also the solitary headrest of the passenger seat together with the special fabric and extra padding that make up the sporty bowl of the chairs.

  • Exterior condition

Significant Sports Red, and although the model was available in other colors, it is the red that is most often associated with Saab Sport, not least because of its fine older paint that has received some scratches, mainly at the rear hatch, and some black paint spots on the left side as a reminder of when the car was parked in a garage and a neighbor sprayed something on the other side of the chicken wire. Should be easy to polish away with today's means and a knowledgeable car caretaker.

  • General condition

Older renovation and slightly patinated, but very presentable and in a representative original finish.

Facts about the model

The Saab Sport was a special edition of the Saab 96 that was launched in 1962 as a replacement for the Saab GT750. This was the first time Saab's gran turismo car was sold in Sweden, as the GT750 was never officially marketed there. It had the same body as the Saab 96 but a different interior and equipment. The exterior difference from the standard 96 were the dual chrome stripes along the lower body, the extra lights, and the different hubcaps. The engine was an 841 cubic centimeter three-cylinder two-stroke engine with one Solex carburetor per cylinder, producing 52 horsepower. The engine was lubricated by a separate oil tank, which meant that the oil did not need to be manually mixed with gasoline (as on the standard model). The gearbox had four gears. The Saab Sport also had front disc brakes, which was unusual at the time. The wheels had four bolts instead of the five bolts on the standard 96. On the US market, the car was called the GT850 (analogous to the previous 750), but after Saab's success in the Monte Carlo Rally, the name was changed to Monte Carlo 850 from 1964. The Sport model changed parallel to the regular Saab 96. It is noteworthy that the tuned engine disappeared with the introduction of the four-stroke engine in the 1967 model year. The model was now called the Monte Carlo V4 and differed only in terms of equipment from the standard model.
