"Now the beautiful 780 Bertone Coupé once owned by a woodshop teacher can become yours. The first owner—and sole driver throughout its life—worked as a woodshop teacher. During the 35 years he owned the car, he drove it only 105,000 kilometres, averaging just 3,000 kilometres per year.

When he passed away in 2025, the car was inherited by an acquaintance. It has now been inspected and approved for road use until 31 May 2027.

As the car has seen very limited use in recent years and the latest recorded service dates from 2022 at 90,000 kilometres, the buyer should expect to carry out a comprehensive service, including oil changes and a general inspection of the vehicle’s various components.

A highly desirable collector’s car, with only 8,518 examples produced between 1985 and 1990."

Description

The car was purchased brand new in 1990 from Bilbolaget Nord in Östersund. The buyer was a woodshop teacher and local inventor. Judging by the condition of the vehicle, which has covered just over 105,000 kilometres in 36 years, he was likely also a very meticulous owner.

According to the current owner, who inherited the car, it was always stored indoors. As far as he can recall, the car was driven very rarely during the winter months. Service records indicate that the car was last serviced in 2022 at 90,000 kilometres, so a sensible starting point for the next owner would be to carry out a full service and inspect items such as tyres, belts, and other components affected by age rather than mileage.

The odometer currently shows 105,000 kilometres, and given the documented history, we see no reason to question its accuracy. The current owner has driven the car only approximately 5 kilometres, solely for inspection purposes.

Included with the car are the owner’s manual, service book, spare wheel, and jack. There is one ignition key. Also included are a glass model of the car and a custom-made protective storage bag with a toolbox.

This is a remote auction. The photographs and information regarding the vehicle and its mechanical condition have been provided by the owner. Bilweb Auctions has not inspected the car in person at the seller’s location.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Powered by the legendary PRV engine, a 2.8-litre V6 developed jointly by Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo. It is paired with an automatic transmission and equipped with air conditioning. According to available information, this Volvo-specification version of the V6 produces 147 horsepower.

The air conditioning system has not been tested, and its functionality is therefore unknown.

A new starter battery and new front brake calipers were fitted in 2025 in connection with the vehicle inspection.

  • Interior condition

The interior appears to be in exceptionally good condition. It raises the classic question: has anyone ever actually sat in the rear seats?

The car is equipped with both air conditioning and a sunroof. It also retains its original Volvo stereo system, a high-end modular component setup for its era, featuring a cassette player and a graphic equalizer.

  • Exterior condition

Other than a waxing in 2025, no major cosmetic work has been carried out by the current owner. The car appears to retain its original paintwork, which remains in good condition with no significant damage. There is some surface rust on the rear wheel arches on both sides, a small rust spot on the driver’s door, and a few minor paint chips on the boot lid that have been touched in. Please refer to the photos.

The car is equipped with a sunroof and sits on original Volvo alloy wheels fitted with older Michelin tyres. Overall, it presents as a tidy and well-cared-for example.

  • General condition

A handsome and well-maintained example with relatively low mileage and just one long-term owner from new.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 780 was produced between 1985 and 1990 and was the most expensive model in Volvo’s range, costing roughly twice as much as a standard Volvo 740. The 780 was a coupé version of the Volvo 760/740, designed by the Italian coachbuilder Bertone and produced in limited numbers, primarily for the North American market.

Although it shared its mechanical foundation with the Volvo 740 and 760, the 780 featured an entirely unique body design. Production took place in Italy, where the cars were hand-assembled by Bertone. Between 1985 and 1990, a total of 8,518 Volvo 780s were built.
