"There is always something special about a well-preserved Saab 99. They are fine road cars with a modern, robust character that belies their age. Simply seeing one, driving one, and taking in the overall experience is enough to lift the spirits. This example is no exception. It feels solid and rewarding on the road, offering genuine driving enjoyment. There are a few details that could benefit from attention, but overall it is a matter of turning the key between the seats and heading out onto the open road."

Description

This car was first registered for road use on 24 November 1983. According to available information, it was driven by its first two owners in Sundsvall and Östersund, respectively, for 16 and 24 years. The current owner acquired the car in September 2023. A Saab enthusiast with several examples in his collection, he has used it sparingly as a hobby vehicle.

In recent years, the car has benefited from a number of maintenance and refurbishment measures, including a new clutch in 2023, a new headliner in 2024, a replacement alternator in 2024, a new rear silencer in 2024, a new ignition module in 2026, a new fuel pump in 2026, and a new left-hand driveshaft boot in 2026. Servicing has been carried out by the owner himself.

Over the past fifteen years, the car has covered approximately 15,000 kilometres. The odometer currently reads 158,050 kilometres. Equipment includes an electric engine heater with an outlet for a cabin heater, as well as auxiliary Hella driving lamps.

Accompanying the car are the original owner’s manual, a completed service record card from the first owner, three sets of keys, and a set of studded winter tyres mounted on original wheels. The car is inspected, roadworthy, and ready to be enjoyed.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine started readily and ran smoothly and steadily. During a test drive on smaller country roads, the steering, clutch, five-speed gearbox, handling, and brakes all performed well. The steering wheel sat slightly off-centre.

The car was not inspected on a lift, but what could be seen underneath appeared to be in good order. The most recent inspection report noted only a damaged outer CV joint boot, which has since been replaced and rectified.

  • Interior condition

A fine interior in well-preserved original condition, showing normal wear consistent with its age and mileage. The seats and rear bench offer good comfort and support. The door panels, trim, and carpets are in good condition, although there is a tear of approximately 10 cm in the lower section of the driver's door trim. The headliner has been replaced and is correctly fitted, with only a slight area of looseness or bulging near the front doors. The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and instruments are all in good condition. The wood-effect trim film shows some lifting and bubbling. All gauges and electrical functions appear to be working properly. Fitted with a newer stereo system and protective rubber/plastic floor mats.

  • Exterior condition

This car has been repainted in its original Azure Blue colour at some point during its life. The paintwork is in good condition, with a glossy finish and retained original character. The right-hand door has a few minor parking dents. The glass, trim, badges, and lighting components are in good condition. Nice accessory wheels with good tyres. The engine bay and luggage compartment are in good condition, although a small cover is missing in the rear.

  • General condition

It is often said that a car model is never better than in its final year of production. This Azure Blue Saab 99 is in fine functional condition and serves as proof that the later models were solid cars in terms of both usability and safety. Certainly, the early cars have their nostalgic charm, but here you get a better car with optimal user-friendliness in a classic enthusiast vehicle with roots in the 1960s, yet benefiting from the technology, performance, and drivability of the 1980s.

Facts about the model

The Saab 99 was introduced for the 1969 model year and quickly became a successful model thanks to its front-wheel-drive layout, innovative safety features, and continuous technical development. Initially offered as a two-door model with 80 horsepower, it was joined the following year by a four-door version equipped with fuel injection. Over the years, several more powerful and better-equipped variants were introduced, including the EMS, LE, and GLE, while the much-publicised turbocharged version arrived in 1976.

For the 1984 model year—the final year of Saab 99 production—only minor updates were made. These included an electronic ignition system, improved handling characteristics, lower-profile seats with automatic electric heating, and new colour options.

In total, 588,643 examples were produced between 1967 and 1984. The model nevertheless lived on in the form of the Saab 90 from 1985 onwards, combining the front section of the Saab 99 with the rear bodywork of the two-door Saab 900. After three years in production, the era of the so-called “broad-shouldered Swede” finally came to an end.
