It was Pelle Petterson who designed the iconic Volvo P1800. He created the sports car during a period when he was an intern at the Frua design studio in Turin. Pelle’s father, Helmer, held a key position at Volvo, which was one reason why it remained a secret for a long time that Pelle was the designer of the P1800 model.
Eventually, Volvo officially acknowledged Pelle Petterson as the originator of the P1800’s design. As a token of appreciation, Volvo presented this S90 to Pelle as a gift.

Facts about the model
The Volvo S90 was the second car built on Volvo’s SPA platform and was described by the company as a true premium sedan aimed at a demanding target audience.
When journalist Alrik Söderlund test drove the Volvo S90 for Auto Motor & Sport magazine in June 2016, it received high praise—especially for its road handling. “It’s truly impressive on the road. The handling is phenomenal…”
In 2016, the Volvo S90 was awarded the Geneva Motor Show’s annual Production Car Design Award. In 2017, it won the Red Dot Design Award, and in 2018, it was named Car of the Year in China. From the outset, the Volvo S90 was targeted at customers in China and North America. In Sweden, the S90 has represented only a modest share of Volvo Cars’ total sales, making it a rare sight on Swedish roads even today. The S90 is no longer in production—manufacturing ended in 2024. A long-wheelbase VIP version was also sold in China.
