"A solid and reliable car with charming patina. Roadworthy, but needs a few minor fixes."

Description

This Ford was sold new in Eskilstuna in 1939 for the sum of 3,400 SEK. The original receipt is included with the car, although the handwriting is difficult to read.

The current owner’s father bought the car in 1970 from a dealership that had been using it as a display piece in their showroom for several years. In 1984, the car was passed on to the current owner.

Over the years, it has been sparingly used—the longest journey undertaken was a round trip from Eskilstuna to Oslo. Since 1970, no major repairs have been made, but the car has received regular service and lubrication.

It is in solid, roadworthy condition with a charming patina, reflective of its age and careful use. The car comes with a set of keys. No service book is available, but the original owner’s manual is included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Runs well in both engine and drivetrain. There's a slight ticking noise from the engine, likely due to valve clearance. The heater unit is installed but currently disconnected. The car’s auxiliary systems appear to function as they should. The wipers are vacuum-operated but do not work satisfactorily, likely due to infrequent use. The clock—function uncertain.

  • Interior condition:

Original interior in a worn but charming, patinated condition. Clear signs of use and age are visible—see photos. Weatherstripping is dry in places—also shown in the photos.

  • Exterior condition:

The car appears to be wearing its original paint, though this cannot be confirmed with certainty. The chrome and brightwork have seen better days but add to the car’s charming patinated character. The body shows some small dents, scratches, paint flaws, and surface rust—ideal for someone who appreciates a classic that can be used without worrying about weather or wear. The windshield is slightly "milky" around the edges. The tires are older and show small cracks. Recently treated with new rust protection.

  • General condition:

A sturdy and honest car with a nice patina. Roadworthy, but has a few minor issues that need attention—such as the windshield wiper mechanism.

Facts about the model

The Ford Prefect was primarily built at Ford’s Dagenham plant in Essex. The model was part of the Ford E93A series, and the 1939 version was among the last produced before manufacturing was temporarily halted due to the outbreak of World War II.

Picture Britain in 1939. Europe trembles on the brink of war, but on the English country roads, cars like the Ford Prefect still roll by—cars that breathe optimism and everyday comfort. This was the car for the middle class: teachers, clerks, and shopkeepers—those who wanted something more than the absolute bare minimum but still needed a car that was simple, reliable, and affordable to maintain.

The Prefect wasn’t a luxury vehicle, but in its modest world, it carried a touch of status.
