"Elegant German engineering at its finest."

Description

This very fine Mercedes 220 SE Coupé was sold new in Sundsvall in 1963 and remained there until 2018 when the current owner purchased it. The previous owner acquired the car in 1986 and began a comprehensive restoration, addressing all rust at a vocational school. The current owner continued the restoration, stripping the body to bare metal and repainting it in DB 180, a color used on Mercedes cars in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The engine, clutch, hydraulics, radiator, heating system, instruments, brakes, and braking system were all renovated or replaced. New tires and a windshield were also fitted, and the original interior was restored. The car’s chrome parts were re-chromed, involving extensive work. Documentation, including receipts for over 200,000 SEK in work and parts, is included (see pictures). The car passed inspection in April 2022 and has since been used mainly for car meets, covering only 270 kilometers since the restoration. It is also equipped with a period-correct self-seeking Blaupunkt radio.

Facts about the model

The W111 was introduced in August 1959 in three versions, all featuring the familiar 2.2-liter six-cylinder engine, and shared its body with the four-cylinder W110. It had panoramic windows and tailfins, which were stylish in the 1950s but quickly became outdated. As a result, its successor, the W108, was launched in August 1965. However, Mercedes-Benz didn’t abandon the W111 body; in July 1965, they introduced the 230 S as an entry-level model to the S-Class, which was produced until January 1968.
