Porsche 356 SC 1600 — 1965

A promising restoration project in the desirable Porsche 356 SC specification. The restoration has been partially started, but the previous owner’s enthusiasm for completing the work has faded. In our view, this is far from an impossible project and offers an excellent foundation for the next custodian. Importantly, the car retains matching numbers throughout, including all major components.

"It is difficult to imagine a more iconic classic within the Porsche world than the 356. This particular SC will require a considerable amount of care and restoration work, but given the strong market values achieved by fully restored 356s, we believe this is a project that can make sound financial sense as well as provide immense satisfaction for the right enthusiast."

Description

This car was first registered on 16 February 1965 in Gothenburg. Its original owner was a local company director who retained the car until 1983. Between 1969 and 1980, it was used primarily by his son. In 1983, the car was sold to another owner in the same region of Sweden, where it subsequently remained largely untouched and saw little to no further development.

The current owner acquired the car in the autumn of 2025. By that time, it had been stored in a garage for approximately 40 years. As the owner already has several ongoing restoration projects occupying his workshop space, he has decided to offer this 356 for sale.

Our assessment is that the engine turns over, but no mechanical functions can be guaranteed. One front wing and a sill section have been replaced. Aside from that, there is a considerable amount of corrosion present, although we are unable to specify its full extent.

The key point of interest is that the car retains matching numbers throughout, a feature that we believe adds significant value and desirability in the context of a future restoration. Naturally, the recorded mileage cannot be verified.

The vehicle has not been inspected underneath by us, and prospective buyers are referred to the photographs provided, some of which were supplied directly by the seller. A degree of documentation and historical material relating to the car is included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

There is only so much we can comment on, for obvious reasons. All instruments appear to be present, but their functionality is unknown. A comprehensive restoration should be assumed, including the engine, gearbox, braking system, and various chassis components. The engine does not currently run, and no attempt has been made to start it.

  • Interior condition

The interior is partially damaged, and certain components may be missing. However, a substantial number of parts are included with the car. The dashboard itself remains in very good driver-quality condition and presents remarkably well considering the car’s age and overall restoration needs.

  • Exterior condition

Partially restored project car, as shown in the photographs. The chrome trim, lighting units, and glass are all in relatively good driver-quality condition.

  • General condition

This is a project where the next owner can set their own level of ambition for the restoration. There is no doubt that restoring a 356 requires a significant investment, but our view is that this particular car is well worth saving for future generations. Its matching-numbers status, short ownership history, and original Swedish delivery all contribute to making it a particularly attractive and worthwhile restoration candidate.

Facts about the model

The Porsche 356 SC, introduced in 1964 as the most advanced version of the 356 series, was powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder boxer engine producing 95 horsepower and offered a top speed of approximately 180 km/h (112 mph). The model was distinguished by its elegant, aerodynamic design and was available in both Coupé and Cabriolet form.

Thanks to its excellent driving dynamics, precise steering, and rear-wheel-drive layout, the 356 SC became highly regarded among sports car enthusiasts. With only around 3,100 examples produced during the 1965 model year, it is today a sought-after classic that played an important role in Porsche’s history and in the development of the modern sports car.
