Piaggio Vespa PX200 — 2000

An attractive model year featuring a front disc brake and an exceptionally low mileage for the marque’s final steel-bodied scooter with a manual gearbox. It has had only a handful of owners, and it appears likely that the first owner left the scooter largely unused for an extended period.

"A little enjoyable tinkering awaits, with equal parts mechanical maintenance and cosmetic attention. Once completed, you’ll have a reliable, low-mileage, and attractive steel-bodied scooter with a manual gearbox and classic styling."

Description

The scooter was first registered for road use in Sweden in March 2000. Its first owner kept it for nearly ten years, although actual use appears to have been very limited. At its most recent approved inspection on 11 August 2009, the odometer showed just 930 kilometres. Today, it reads 1,660 kilometres.

The additional 730 kilometres were most likely covered between 2009 and 2011. The current owner purchased the scooter around that time, rode it only occasionally, and has since kept it in garage storage, starting it from time to time but otherwise leaving it largely unused.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine starts easily with the choke engaged, but stalls as soon as the choke is pushed in. This indicates an incorrect air-fuel mixture, with too much air and insufficient fuel reaching the engine. Given the scooter’s long periods of inactivity, the most likely cause is a carburettor that requires cleaning, particularly the jets and internal passages.

Otherwise, the hydraulic disc brake performs well, although a brake fluid change is recommended to ensure that no moisture has accumulated in the system. The battery is relatively new.

  • Exterior condition

The scooter has excellent potential to look truly outstanding with attention to the details, but it would benefit from a purely cosmetic refresh and a thorough polish. The plastic section of the steering head could be refinished, and the floorboard shows some paint damage, possibly caused by moisture trapped beneath a rubber mat. Replacing or restoring the surface-rusted screw heads throughout would make a significant difference to the overall presentation.

  • General condition

A subjective to-do list: polish, clean, repaint, and/or replace any parts affected by surface rust. Carry out an oil service and give the carburettor an ultrasonic cleaning—or at the very least thoroughly clean all jets and passages. Fit a new set of quality tyres with a classic tread pattern, such as Michelin S83s. Remove the rather ungainly mirrors and replace them with a sturdy Stadium mirror mounted on the leg shield. The front and rear luggage racks are practical, but the backrest is less visually appealing.

Again, this is a subjective list. What is beyond dispute, however, is the scooter’s considerable potential. With relatively little effort, it could become a beautifully preserved, low-mileage classic steel-bodied scooter, benefiting from many of the final modern refinements introduced by the factory.

Facts about the model

The Vespa PX series was originally introduced in 1977 and quickly became one of Piaggio’s most popular models, as well as one of its longest-lived. The MY98 version represents the final evolution of the classic hand-shifted two-stroke scooter, featuring updates such as a hydraulically operated front disc brake. Combining timeless styling with proven and reliable engineering, it remains one of the definitive expressions of the traditional Vespa concept.
