Description
That included regular trips along the preserved cobblestone section of the old Rikstvåan road south of Ljungskile, as well as journeys all the way to Gothenburg for various motoring events. It was equally enjoyable in more everyday situations, such as when the owner and his wife would be overtaken by a group of youngsters leaning out of a passing car and shouting, “Isn't it about time you bought a car?”
A fair question, perhaps—but one of the greatest pleasures of owning a pre-war automobile is precisely its ability to be used in ordinary life. Whether heading to a local event or simply making a leisurely trip to the supermarket, these cars offer a uniquely charming and rewarding motoring experience that modern vehicles simply cannot replicate.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The engine starts easily once the ignition and hand-throttle controls are operated correctly. Dodge was an early adopter of electric starting and a 12-volt electrical system. The muffler cracked after an engine backfire, but a replacement muffler is included with the car.
-
Interior condition
Older leather upholstery with a somewhat dry, firm, and hard-wearing feel. Durability is also the defining characteristic of the rest of the interior, where painted metal and wood convey a sense of honest, robust craftsmanship.
-
Exterior condition
Presentable driver-quality paintwork with some touch-ups and signs of older wear, giving the car the charm of a well-loved grandfather’s car with an approachable and user-friendly character. It rides on sturdy wooden-spoke artillery wheels. The convertible top has a couple of small holes that have been repaired with tape.
-
General condition
A vehicle of considerable interest from both an engineering and automotive-historical perspective, representing the brand’s early and deliberate strategy during the formative years of the automobile.

Facts about the model
The year 1919 was a remarkable one for Dodge Brothers. During that single year, the company produced more than 100,000 vehicles and celebrated the milestone of its 400,000th car rolling off the production line since production began. While Ford’s Model T required a vigorous effort to hand-crank into life and relied on a very basic electrical system, the Dodge offered what was considered genuine luxury. The car was equipped with a modern 12-volt electrical system supplied by North East Electric Co. Thanks to this advanced setup, both an electric starter motor and electric headlamps were standard equipment. The driver simply started the engine by pressing a foot-operated button on the floor—an enormous convenience at the time.
Brothers John and Horace Dodge established their first machine shop in 1900. Their engineering talent quickly attracted the attention of several pioneers of the emerging automotive industry, including Ransom E. Olds and Henry Ford, whose companies purchased engines, gearboxes, and axles from Dodge Brothers. Around 1913, the brothers realised they were fully capable of building an entire automobile themselves. The timing proved ideal, as Henry Ford had decided to bring the production of many vehicle components in-house.
The first Dodge Brothers automobile was delivered on 14 November 1914, and the company rapidly gained a reputation for offering excellent engineering at a reasonable price. Initially, only a single model was available: a four-seat open touring car priced at $785. Word of the quality of Dodge automobiles spread quickly. Although the Dodge brothers were not particularly known for radical innovation, they were pioneers in introducing an all-steel body construction for large-scale production.
It is highly likely that more Dodge Brothers vehicles saw overseas military service during the First World War than those of any other manufacturer. By 1920, Dodge ranked second in American automotive sales, surpassed only by its former customer, Ford. Tragically, both John and Horace Dodge died during 1920, leaving the company in the hands of their widows.
By 1925, Dodge had slipped to fifth place in the sales rankings. That year, the company was sold to the New York investment firm Dillon, Read & Company for $146 million—a record-breaking sum at the time. Dillon, Read & Company subsequently sold the business to Walter P. Chrysler in 1928, making Dodge a distinct marque within the Chrysler Corporation.
