"It’s not just original cars that count as classics or enthusiast vehicles. Early on, various styles and modifications began to emerge—most notably with the Beetle. When the Type 3 was introduced, it too quickly became a canvas for enthusiast attention and creativity, especially the Fastback model, which was soon refined and personalized by dedicated owners.

The so-called California Look, featuring lowered, stripped-down, and mildly modified cars, became hugely popular. This particular car is built in that tradition—well-crafted and well-functioning. While there are some details that could use attention, overall, this is a very presentable and appealing vehicle in fine condition."

Description

This car was first registered for road use on September 4, 1967, and therefore never experienced driving on the left-hand side of the road. Its earlier history is currently unknown. Originally light grey, it is reported to have had 19 owners. Somewhere along the way, it received its current appearance. The exact modifications—such as what has been done to the engine—are not known.

The current owner acquired the car in April. At that time, it was not running, but after adjusting and tuning the carburetors, the car now runs well. An original owner’s manual is included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts easily and runs smoothly and calmly in both engine and drivetrain. It has a bit of an extra growl—but that’s intentional. There have been some minor charging issues, but otherwise, it functions well.

During a short test drive in an industrial area, the car felt lively, with good handling, steering, clutch response, gearbox operation, and braking performance.

It hasn’t been inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen, everything looked fine. That said, a 1960s Volkswagen with its floorpan can always hold surprises. However, no issues were noted during the most recent inspection.

  • Interior condition:

Much of the interior has been modified, reportedly with newer components from a VW Golf. It’s in good condition overall, though the driver’s seat cushion shows some wear and damage. The headliner is original but has been repainted, and the textile carpets are newer and in good condition.

The steering wheel (Momo), controls, and various details are not original, but the dashboard and gauges are in nice original condition. A newer stereo system has been installed, with speakers in the front and rear and a subwoofer in the rear luggage compartment—though not currently connected, so functionality is uncertain. Fitted with newer retractable seatbelts.

  • Exterior condition:

Nicely done paintwork, likely completed during the car’s restoration. Windows and other trim appear to have been removed during the process. Now fitted with newer rubber seals around the windows and doors, all in good condition. The glass, chrome, emblems, and lighting components are all in fine shape.

Fitted with stylish 18-inch Outlaw wheels and Avon tires. The engine bay is clean and in good condition. Both the front and rear luggage compartments are tidy, cleared out, and fitted with new carpeting. No spare wheel present in the front compartment.

  • General condition:

Not a car for the originality purist, but definitely for those who appreciate a bold take on the classic mid-’60s Fastback. This type of Cal-look inspired build has many fans and makes for a great enthusiast vehicle within that genre.

Facts about the model

The Volkswagen Type 3 was originally introduced as the 1500 and later as the 1600. It came in three body styles: Notchback, Fastback, and the wagon variant known as the Squareback—or simply Variant. As usual for VW, it featured a rear-mounted, air-cooled engine, rear-wheel drive, and torsion bar suspension.

The ponton-style body was designed in 1959, and when production began in August 1961, the Notchback was introduced first, followed by the Variant in February the following year. The coupé-style TL (Fastback) arrived in August 1965, coinciding with the debut of the 1600 engine. It also marked the first Volkswagen to feature front disc brakes.

Volkswagen initially intended for the coupé to replace the Notchback, but in many markets the sedan remained more popular, and all three body styles continued in production until the end in 1973.

In 1968, the Type 3 became the first German car equipped with electronic fuel injection as standard. A facelift followed in 1970, with the nose extended by 115 mm—greatly improving luggage space. This update also introduced larger bumpers and new taillights.

Though the Type 3 had a much more modern design compared to the Beetle (Type 1), it never reached the same level of popularity.

However, it gained a solid following on rally stages due to its peppy engine, durability, and solid road manners. Unfortunately, many of these cars were lost to motorsport, or simply used up as fun “beater” cars, which means relatively few well-preserved examples remain today.

While it couldn’t match the Beetle in terms of numbers, the Type 3 still saw a respectable total production of 2,584,904 units.
