"Pininfarina was responsible both for the design and construction of Fiat’s Spider; in the later years, the company in Grugliasco outside Turin also took over ownership of the model. Here is a car in ready-to-drive condition and great fun to drive. Well cared for, with a well-documented history from the past 20 years during which the car has had the same owner."

Description

According to records, this wagon was sold new in Germany in April 1984 and is said to have had two owners there. The first owner relocated the plastic side mirrors from the ventilation windows to the older-style chrome mirrors and mounted them as before on the doors. It was imported from Germany to Sweden in 2005 and registered for road use on May 31 of the same year. The current owner, a car enthusiast with a special fondness for Fiat, acquired the wagon on September 15, 2005. It has only been driven in summer and has always been stored in a heated garage. The mileage is 15,328 km (the odometer has rolled over once). He has maintained and serviced the car himself over the years. He also replaced the plastic bumpers with older-style chrome ones. Everything is documented and kept in a folder, including receipts, inspection reports, various documents, and technical documentation. The car comes with a cover and two sets of keys. Inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and the engine and drivetrain run smoothly and steadily. The Twin-cam engine performs as it should. During a short test drive in a nearby suburb, everything related to handling, steering, clutch, shifting, and braking was experienced to work well. The timing belt was replaced on March 17, 2020, at 146,260 km.
Not inspected on a lift, but what could be seen looked reliable, and there were no remarks during inspections.

  • Interior condition:

Interior in nice original condition. Good comfort in the seats, which have held up well over the years. Fine door panels and carpets. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in good condition. The rear seat cushion can be removed for better cargo capacity. A wind deflector is now installed there. The wood trim around the gauges has been replaced; the original one is included. All electrical functions work, but the oil pressure warning light is not functioning—however, the oil pressure gauge works. Good carpets. Newer stereo system.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice paintwork in the original color Champagne Metallic 512F. There is a slight color difference on the passenger door, likely due to a repaint at some point when the car was in Germany. There are some stone chips, minor scratches, and a small dent, but overall the car is well preserved for its age and mileage. The glass, trim, emblems, and lighting details are in good condition. Extra protective strips are fitted along the vertical door edges. The soft top is intact and reportedly watertight. Nice wheels and tires. Engine and trunk compartments are equally clean and in good condition.

  • General condition:

A model produced for 18 years across three decades, which today is both a fine enthusiast’s car and a classic with roots in the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. Here presented in a sober style where the somewhat bulky details—such as large side mirrors and bumpers from the final model years—have been replaced with the slimmer, chromed versions from the ’60s and ’70s. Otherwise, it is in fine original condition with well-maintained mechanics and a tidy exterior.

Facts about the model

The Fiat 124 was produced from 1966 to 1975. The Spider model was manufactured until 1985, with the last years known as the Pininfarina Spidereuropa.
Fiat enjoyed great success in the 1950s and 1960s with its small cars, but its mid-sized models also performed well. The 124 model, which succeeded the 13/1500 model (called Juventus in Sweden), was also a major success. The new model was a traditional car with a 4-cylinder inline engine, front engine and rear-wheel drive layout, and a box-shaped unibody construction. It was named European Car of the Year in 1967 and was also built under license in many countries.
Traditional body styles included four- and five-door versions, as well as two-door variants: a coupe and a convertible (Spider). The Berlina, which became the volume model, was introduced in March 1966. The Familiare station wagon came later that year. For the 1969 model year, a larger engine and a tougher front end were introduced under the name Special. In 1970, the Special T was launched—the "T" stood for Twin-cam, the same engine used in the two-door versions. The coupe was designed by Fiat itself and presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1967.
The year before, at the Turin Motor Show in 1966, the Fiat 124 Spider was introduced, designed and built by Pininfarina. It featured Fiat’s pride, the Twin-cam DOHC engine, and a five-speed gearbox. When the other versions were gradually discontinued—ending with the coupe in 1977—Fiat also ceased selling the Spider in Europe. However, production and export to the USA continued, where the Spider remained popular.
From 1982, Fiat gradually withdrew, and production of the Spider continued under Pininfarina as the SpiderEuropa. Sales resumed in Europe, but ended in 1985.
Over the years, the Spider shared its assembly line with models like the Alfa Romeo Spider and Peugeot 404 & 504 convertibles. In 1972-73, a special version called the Abarth Rally was built, featuring an independent rear suspension, twin carburetors with 128 hp, lightweight body materials, and a hardtop—today a highly sought-after version.
In total, 198,000 Spiders were built between 1967 and 1985.
