"A well-built car equipped with the right accessories from the 1970s, when these cars were among the hottest you could drive and own. Today, in this condition, it’s a classic fun car made to be enjoyed. A true homage to Alpina."

Description

This car was first registered on August 4, 1970, and had a rough early life. By 1984, it had gone through 11 owners and was in need of rescue. That’s when the current owner, a BMW enthusiast and one of the founders of Club BMW Sweden, stepped in and acquired the car. The chassis was fundamentally sound but not in original condition—parts of the body had been replaced. It’s likely that the specific Ti parts and identity were transferred to a healthy body. This car was therefore not suited for a strict original restoration but was better prepared for spirited driving and Track Days.

In 1984/85, the car underwent a complete overhaul, dismantled down to components, with repairs to the engine, chassis, and body. It was fully painted in a blue/green metallic and received extensive rust protection. A new owner took over, but the car was put into storage in 1995 and then came back out in 2022, when the current owner bought it back. At that time, new brakes, clutch, hydraulics, radiator, and more were installed. After sitting unused for 20 years and sustaining some damage, the car was repaired and repainted again—now in the original Colorado color on the sides and roof.

Period-appropriate extras include an Alpina-inspired paint scheme, 5-speed Getrag dog-leg gearbox, limited-slip differential with a 3.90:1 ratio and 25% lockup, and modified drive shafts. The engine has Alpina-style tuning with dual 48mm Dellorto carburetors, a sharper 304-degree camshaft, ported valves and chambers, spaghetti exhaust manifold, and produces approximately 150 hp. The radiator was replaced with one from a Volvo Amazon, common practice at the time. The only deviations from the period setup are a digital distributor, electric cooling fan, and electric fuel pump.

The chassis and brakes are partly sourced from a 2002 Turbo, including the 70-liter fuel tank. The front brakes are ventilated, and there’s a 20mm anti-roll bar. The battery has been relocated to the rear. Suspension consists of a chassis kit from G-Power, the first with Koni shock absorbers. All modifications, including the roll cage, were approved and registered during the 1990s.

Seats are from a BMW E21, equipped with four-point harnesses and footrests. The rear seat backrest has been removed to accommodate the roll cage but is included with the car.

The car comes with various useful parts, both original for restoration and upgrades—such as strut braces, camber plates, and a coilover conversion kit for the front struts (see pictures). Extensive documentation is included, such as brochures, manuals, periodicals, and the original workshop manual. Two sets of keys are provided. The car was last inspected and approved for MHRF insurance in spring 2024.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs lively and smoothly in the engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive, everything felt to work smoothly and well, including handling, steering, clutch, gearbox, and brakes. There is a slight scrape when shifting into second gear, which improves once the gearbox is warm. The car is lowered and stiff, causing the tires to rub slightly at full steering lock.

The underside was inspected on a two-post lift and looked good, with no comments from vehicle inspections. There was a minor leak near the gearbox.

  • Interior condition:

Interior partly original, fitted with seats from a newer BMW E21. Door panels and parcel shelf are well-preserved originals without speaker holes. Nice carpets. Headliner is in good condition with some minor wear. Leather steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in good and functional condition. Equipped with a roll cage and Sabelt four-point harness on the driver’s side. Radio is not working.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice paintwork in BMW’s classic orange color with blue/green sections and some wear patina. Glass, chrome, emblems, trim, and lighting details are all in good condition. The wheels are restored original 5.13-inch units with the very rare hubcaps found only on the 2002 Ti—half-painted silver instead of chrome. The engine bay and luggage compartments are in fine condition. The trunk has been modified to accommodate a larger fuel tank and battery. The spare wheel is from a Turbo model for better weight distribution.

  • General condition:

This car has the looks, aura, mechanics, and performance that get the pulse racing—for those who experienced the ’70s firsthand and for everyone who, over the years, has seen and heard the stories of these iconic vehicles. A true classic and highly sought-after collector’s car today.

Facts about the model

After BMW restarted production following World War II, the company offered a wide range of motorcycles, small cars, large luxury vehicles, and sports cars. In the early 1960s, BMW began to focus their lineup, and the Neue Klasse (New Class)—a larger mid-sized car with a sleek, spacious body and modern design—became a success.

By the mid-1960s, BMW realized they needed a slightly smaller car to meet the growing demands of the expanding middle class. Building on the success of the Neue Klasse, they developed a new model initially fitted with the 1600 engine from the larger car but featuring two doors. This model was simply called the 1600-2. The rest is history and a true success story. Over time, the “-2” was incorporated into the model name, and the lineup expanded to include the 1502, 1602, 1802, and 2002, named according to engine displacement. Various trim levels and badges were added depending on equipment.

The range included two-door sedans, convertible versions, a two-door Touring estate, and as the crown jewel, a turbocharged version was launched in 1973. The 02 series was produced until 1977 with minor cosmetic upgrades over the years. Regardless of engine, these cars were lively, fun to drive, and had excellent handling. Both drivers with sporty ambitions and racers appreciated the model.

The 2002 Ti version from 1970 featured a four-cylinder inline engine with an overhead camshaft, 1990 cc displacement, and 120 hp DIN at 5,500 rpm. It was equipped with dual Solex carburetors, a four-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and independent suspension on all wheels. The braking system and suspension were reinforced. At the time, this version was a high-performance car that was still very practical for everyday use. The model formed the foundation for BMW’s motorsport successes with the 02 series, notably as a successful rally car driven internationally by drivers like Björn Waldegård and Ingvar Carlsson. Due to its racing heritage, few cars have survived to this day. The 2002 Ti was produced in 16,448 units from 1968 to 1971.

In total, 868,000 02-series cars were built between 1966 and 1977.
