"An unbelievably well-preserved Volvo 66 that was used without much thought of preserving it for the future, but thanks to careful usage and attention, it suddenly became a sought-after vintage car. Only used by one owner who bought the car new in 1978 and drove it extremely sparingly until she turned 80. Inspection exempt and ready to drive."

Description

On rare occasions, vehicles of this caliber emerge. They were rather unremarkable when new, not the most expensive in the car dealer’s showroom either. What sets them apart from other cars is that they hit the jackpot when it comes to owners.
This Volvo 66 is precisely such a car. In 1978, it stood new and gleaming at the Volvo dealer in Gothenburg. The showroom also featured Volvo’s prestige models, both the 264 GLE and the sporty 242 GT. A lady with the French-sounding first name Eddys entered the dealership. She wanted to trade in her late husband’s Volvo 244 for an automatic transmission car. She saw the beautiful light yellow Volvo 66 and decided to buy it. Compact and easy to park, automatic with stepless variomatic transmission, and with reasonable fuel consumption (according to the fuel declaration sticker on the windshield) were decisive factors. The car’s new owner immediately fell in love with the car and only drove it in the summertime. She used it sparingly and occasionally drove it to the summer cottage outside Borås. Both at her home address and at the summer residence, there were garages where she always stored the car.
When autumn came with rain and bad weather, she parked the car. There it stood safely stored until spring. After a few years, when the lady retired and moved to Värmland, specifically to Blomskog, she took her little yellow car with her. Here, the car was used just as sparingly and mostly driven to the local shop and when visiting nearby relatives.
When Eddys turned 80, she decided to stop driving. But she couldn’t bear to sell the car, so it remained in the garage. In 2013, Eddys passed away, and the car was taken over by her son. In 2022, the car was taken out, given an inspection, and inspected. What remains in the car, such as parking tickets, flashlights, sunglasses, and more, was left by the car’s first owner and sole user. The car registry lists 5 registered owners, including the Volvo dealer, Eddys Hillensjö, her son Ulf, another relative, and the current owner.
The current owner has neither the space nor the time to take care of this unique car. He hopes that it will go to someone who will appreciate and take care of this unique, untouched low-mileage car. Bilweb auctions thank Ulf Hillensjö for sharing the story of his mother’s car ownership.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

A 4-cylinder in-line engine of 1.3 liters with 57 lively horsepower. Additionally, it features the stepless variomatic transmission, which is truly fully automatic with its centrifugal clutch and V-belt drive in perfect harmony. The engine has been freshly serviced, and new drive belts have been fitted to the variomatic. It ran fantastically well during the test drive. The engine purrs like a sewing machine and roars like a jet plane about to take off at higher speeds. But that’s exactly how they should sound.

  • Interior condition:

Completely original and untouched. The cargo net and parcel shelf are still intact. Equally fine in the cargo area.

  • Exterior condition:

Wonderfully untouched original paintwork. Only polished. We conclude that it’s the absence of sunlight due to constant garage storage that has kept it so intact. On the left side of the hood at the press crease and at the top edge of the driver’s door, there’s extremely little surface rust. See the pictures. The owner has chosen not to address this as he believes the car is nicer untouched. New tires all around including the spare wheel.

  • General condition:

A very nice untouched Volvo 66 that evokes desire.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 66 was produced in two different versions: a 2-door sedan and a 3-door estate. The cars were rear-wheel drive. What makes this car special is its continuously variable variomatic transmission, which is truly automatic with its centrifugal clutch and belt drive in pleasant combination with a differential lock. Push the lever forward to move the car forward. Pull the lever back to move the car in the other direction, actually as fast as going forward. A fun and quirky vehicle that quickly gained the nickname “Remjohan” by the Swedish people.

With its 1.1-liter Renault-manufactured engine producing 47 horsepower and variomatic automatic transmission, it took only 23.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. The top speed was reported to be 137 km/h.

From the model year 1976, the name was changed to Volvo 66, and the car was manufactured with minor changes until 1980. The car was succeeded by the Volvo 340, which was also a design inherited by Volvo from DAF.
