"Approaching its 60th birthday, this Saab 96 delivers an experience remarkably close to that of a new car. An extraordinary unrestored survivor."

Description

First registered in October 1967, this Saab 96 was purchased new by the current owner's mother. Following her passing, the car was inherited by her daughter. Neither owner, however, used the car to any significant extent.

Since its last inspection in 2017, the car has covered just 350 kilometres. Over the course of its 58-year life, the odometer has accumulated only 31,000 kilometres.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine starts readily both hot and cold. The automatic choke may benefit from adjustment, as the idle speed is slightly higher than expected, although this has no noticeable effect on performance or drivability.

On the road, the car feels solid and composed. The gearbox shifts smoothly and quietly, while the steering and brakes require a little more effort—exactly as one would expect from a Saab 96 of this era. There is no discernible play in the steering or suspension. The engine pulls strongly and evenly throughout the rev range, delivering a lively and eager driving experience.

  • Interior condition

The interior can, by and large, be described as being in near-new condition. The textile carpeting is exceptionally well preserved, while the original rear rubber floor mat has become somewhat dry and brittle with age. The seats have retained their original firmness and show virtually no signs of wear.

The only departure from originality is a more modern audio system. However, this can easily be reversed, as the original blanking plate is included with the car.

The luggage compartment is in the same astonishingly well-preserved condition. It still contains the jack and the original Pirelli Cinturato spare wheel, which remains unused. Also included is the Saab-specific spare fuel canister.

  • Exterior condition

The bodywork is straight, solid, and completely free from accident damage, with no evidence of previous repairs or restoration work. This is an exceptionally sound example. The paintwork is largely original, with localised touch-ups carried out over the years. Some have been executed to a high standard, while others are more noticeable.

The glass, rubber trim, lock mechanisms, and seals are all in remarkably good condition. The chrome bumpers have developed a degree of age-related patina but remain free from damage, while some of the cast metal components display minor surface pitting.

Closer inspection reveals a number of touched-up areas, both small and somewhat larger, but the overall impression is of a very tidy, well-preserved, and highly presentable car.

  • General condition

It is rare to encounter a car of this age that combines such a long ownership history, exceptionally low mileage, and such a remarkably well-preserved condition. Together, these qualities make this Saab 96 a truly outstanding survivor and a highly compelling collector’s example.
