"The backbone of Mercedes-Benz throughout the 1970s, the compact model became the car that many enthusiasts today associate with the brand’s renowned reputation for quality, durability, and engineering excellence."

Description

The car was delivered to its first owner, Ingrid Claesson of Örebro, in March 1976 by Philipsons Bil AB, also located in Örebro. The first and second scheduled maintenance inspections, carried out at just over 100 and 700 kilometers respectively, are documented in the service booklet, although no subsequent entries were recorded.

Included in the glove compartment is a well-preserved instruction booklet for the then-modern LIV-Futuramatic inertia-reel seat belt system, produced by Autoliv in Vårgårda. According to registration records, the car has had 11 owners over the years, some of whom were motor dealers.

A previous owner carried out a light restoration, and the car was repainted a few years ago. The most recent—and final—approved roadworthiness inspection was completed on December 1, 2022.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts reliably and, thanks to its smooth inline six-cylinder engine, offers a distinctly different character from its four-cylinder and diesel-powered siblings. The engine recently underwent a major service, during which a new timing chain was installed, contributing to its strong mechanical condition and dependable performance.

  • Interior condition

The original interior is well preserved, with the upholstery remaining in fine condition and the seats retaining the firm support and comfort for which Mercedes-Benz was renowned. The gear lever knob has been replaced with a wooden item, although the original knob is included for those who prefer complete originality.

The headliner is in good condition, and the electric sunroof operates quickly and smoothly. Some variations in interior color may appear in the photographs, but these are merely reflections from nearby buildings and surrounding greenery in the bright sunlight.

  • Exterior condition

A repaint in the car’s original factory color, completed in 2022, gives the exterior a clean and highly presentable appearance. The chrome trim and glass are in good condition throughout. The headlamp wipers—an interesting feature specific to cars delivered to the Swedish market—appear complete, although they do not seem to be operational. In any case, they have not been a legal requirement since Sweden joined the European Union.

The car is fitted with newer Vitour tires mounted on its original wheels, complete with the distinctive and attractive factory wheel covers that complement the model’s classic Mercedes-Benz styling.

  • General condition

A pleasant and well-presented example that leaves a fresh overall impression. It is a fine representative of the model, which today remains an accessible, practical, and enjoyable classic—equally suited to regular driving as it is to enthusiast ownership.

Facts about the model

The model was produced from December 1967 until December 1976 and was the first Mercedes-Benz to be offered with such a wide range of engine options, a strategy that resulted in an extensive and diverse model lineup. Mercedes used the designation “/8” on the W114 and W115 model identification plates to indicate their 1968 launch year. This gave rise to the popular nickname “/8” or Slash Eight, as well as the German term Strich Acht, loosely translated as “Stroke Eight.”

The W115 designation covered the four-cylinder petrol and diesel variants, as well as the five-cylinder diesel models, while W114 was reserved for the six-cylinder versions. Today, the W114/W115 series is widely regarded as one of Mercedes-Benz’s most important and durable model ranges, renowned for its robust engineering, comfort, and long-lasting reliability.
