Description
This example was imported from Germany by a dealer in 2003 and was subsequently purchased by its current owner. He has never driven it in winter and has taken good care of the BMW. A binder containing inspection reports and receipts accompanies the car, along with the owner’s manual and service book. The odometer reads 142,880 km. The most recent service was carried out in 2020.
Over the past two years, the car has been off the road due to the owner’s declining health, which is also the reason it is now being offered for auction. It has recently passed inspection with no remarks, and the inspection remains valid until 31 May next year. One set of keys is included.
The main items requiring attention in the near future are a routine service and a pair of new tires.

Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The engine starts easily and runs well, and the transmission, suspension, and brakes all perform as they should. A short test drive indicated that the car functions well overall, which was further confirmed by the recent roadworthiness inspection. Electrical features such as the power windows, windshield wipers, and cabin fan were tested and found to be working properly. The radio was not tested, although the owner has the security code for it.
The power-operated soft top required a little manual assistance before folding down completely, which is a common issue on this model. During the test drive, a slight vibration could be felt through the steering wheel. This may be caused by flat spots on the tires after the car has been stationary for several years. The front tires in particular showed limited tread depth, and all four tires are of an older age. A new starter battery has recently been installed. -
Interior condition
The black leather upholstery is in very good condition, showing no significant wear even in the areas most prone to use. The steering wheel displays some signs of age and use, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance of the car. The condition of both the engine bay and the luggage compartment further suggests that this is a well-maintained example.
-
Exterior condition
Clean and well-presented throughout. No visible rust was observed on the bodywork. The hood has accumulated a fair number of stone chips over the years. The soft top is finished in black fabric and is free from damage; it was replaced a few years ago as part of an insurance claim. The underbody is in excellent condition.

General condition
This BMW Z3 has been in the same ownership since 2003, features relatively low mileage, runs well, and presents beautifully. A highly appealing example of BMW’s classic roadster that is ready to be enjoyed on the road once again.

Facts about the model
It was also the first BMW model to be manufactured exclusively outside Germany, being built at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. Technically, the Z3 was largely based on the E36 generation of the BMW 3 Series.
The Z3 was offered with a wide range of four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines. An easy way to identify a six-cylinder model is by its twin exhaust outlets, whereas four-cylinder versions have only a single exhaust pipe. In 1998, the open-top roadster was joined by a coupé variant. Both the roadster and coupé were also available in high-performance M versions.
Production of the Z3 ended in 2002, when it was succeeded by the BMW Z4.
