"Started but (barely) not driven — to paraphrase James Bond."

Description

The lucky youngster who owned one of these must have been the king of the crew. Around this time, it had just become legal for moped manufacturers to replace pedals with the much more modern kick-starter. The moped had evolved from a motorized bicycle into a simpler, slower version of a motorcycle — a major step in its development.

This moped has been part of a collection for many years for nostalgic reasons but has barely been ridden during that time. Its earlier history is unknown.

Facts about the model

The Zündapp factory operated from 1917 to 1984. The name is an abbreviation of Zünder und Apparatebau G.m.b.H., originally producing detonators for military use. The first motorcycle Zündapp manufactured was the Z22, introduced in 1921. During World War II, the company produced various models for military purposes, including versions with sidecars.

After the war, the company shifted its focus toward smaller and lighter vehicles—primarily two-wheelers such as scooters, mopeds, and lightweight motorcycles. They even ventured into microcars with the four-wheeled Janus.

From the mid-1960s and about a decade onward, Swedish youth culture was split into two major camps: those who swore by Puch and those loyal to Zündapp. No known acts of violence resulted from this rivalry—but there are plenty of tales of burnouts and wheelies outside local hot dog stands.

Bankruptcy eventually became inevitable and was declared in 1984. The remaining assets, including manufacturing equipment and know-how, were taken over by Xunda Motor Co in Tianjin, China. From 1987 to 1990, they produced small motorcycles based on the original German Zündapp designs.
