Description

The Dolling is a formula car developed for the highly popular Formula V racing class of the 1960s. The “V” stood for Volkswagen, from which the engine, gearbox, and chassis components were sourced. The frame was priced at 1,500 SEK and the body at 1,300 SEK plus turnover tax when purchased from Racingplast in Burträsk, just outside Skellefteå. The sales office was located in Stockholm.

Willy Dolling was a well-known engine tuner and race mechanic in Stockholm during the 1950s and 60s, working with drivers such as C-G Hammarlund and Sten Axelsson. He also began building Dolling Formula V cars and is said to have constructed some of the earliest beach buggies. For many years, Willy Dolling could also be seen at racetracks selling high-octane racing fuel from the famous BP Racing bus.

The Dolling Formula V was manufactured by Racingplast in Burträsk, with Willy Dolling responsible for the design.

This particular example is of unknown type and model year, but it is equipped with a 1300 cc engine. The current owner purchased it from a closed-down restaurant, where it had been used as decoration. Molds for the bodywork are reportedly still in existence with an enthusiast in the Västerås area.

Facts about the model

Formula Vee is a racing class developed in the 1960s as an affordable entry point into formula car racing. Many successful racing drivers throughout history began their careers this way. The basic concept was simple: buy or build a chassis and body, then complete it with mechanical parts from a VW. Voilà — a race car was born!
