"The T-Gul has retained its appeal despite more than 30 years having passed since the final example rolled off the production line. At the time, the T-Gul was Volvo’s fastest, most powerful, and most expensive car ever built — the kind of car that inspires dreams. Many young men longed for a T-Gul, but for most, it remained just that: an unattainable dream car from their youth.

Now the opportunity has arrived to own one. With some attention to a few cosmetic imperfections and continued servicing and maintenance, you’ll still have one of the coolest cars Volvo has ever produced.

Best of all, this example can be enjoyed and driven exactly as it is today, without the fear that a stone chip or minor blemish will diminish its value.

Inspection approved until 2028-03-31. Just turn the key and drive."

Description

The car was originally sold new by Bil-Nilsson in Alingsås in November 1995 and was assigned the registration number JOE 199 by the Swedish Transport Agency.

Just over ten years ago, the car was purchased by a Finnish Volvo enthusiast living in Gothenburg, where he worked for Volvo. When he later moved back to Finland to retire, the yellow Volvo accompanied him as part of his household relocation. The Finnish owner attended numerous Volvo gatherings in both Finland and Sweden with the car, enjoying it enthusiastically while also taking very good care of it.

There are two fully stamped service books. The first one is completed up to 180,000 km and also contains a note (without an official stamp) stating that the timing belt was replaced at 263,330 km in 2013. The reason there are two service books is simply that the first one became completely full, requiring a new book to be issued.

The car has a complete documented service history up to 305,445 km (in both Sweden and Finland). It has also recently undergone a full inspection and service at its current mileage. During its Finnish registration period, the car carried the registration number YIY282.

In the autumn of 2025, the Finn visited a car dealership in northern Sweden as a prospective buyer of another enthusiast vehicle — a Mercedes 250 TD. A deal was made. During the visit, he was offered the opportunity to sell his T-Gul to the company owner. He initially declined, but later reconsidered and the deal was completed. The company owner, Glenn, is primarily a Saab enthusiast and ultimately found it difficult to see himself as a Volvo owner, despite that having been the original intention.

When the car was re-imported to Sweden and registered again in March 2026, it received its current registration number, PRL54F.

The car will remain at the dealership in northern Sweden during the auction, but will be delivered to his business partner in Stockholm afterwards, where the buyer can pick it up — unless, of course, it ends up being bought by someone from northern Sweden.

The odometer currently shows 310,000 km. We believe this to be accurate, although we cannot guarantee it with certainty, as the car has changed both registration numbers and countries twice during its life. Given the substantial mileage, there is little reason to suspect odometer tampering. At the same time, the mileage should not be the sole focus. This is clearly a car that has been cherished by its owners and properly maintained throughout its life.

Included with the car are the spare wheel, jack, owner’s manual, service book, as well as receipts and service records from both Sweden and Finland. An additional set of Volvo R wheels fitted with friction winter tyres is also included.

This is a remote auction. The photos and information regarding the vehicle and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has therefore not physically inspected the car at the seller’s premises.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Powered by a 2.3-litre inline five-cylinder turbocharged engine with a stated output of 226 hp. (Thanks to an overboost function that temporarily increases output to 240 hp for up to 30 seconds at full throttle, the T-5R truly stood out when new.) The car is equipped with an automatic transmission.

According to the owner, everything functions as it should. There are no fluid leaks from the drivetrain — everything is dry and in good condition.

  • Interior condition

There is some wear present, but the overall condition is better than average considering the car’s age and mileage. Slightly more wear can be seen on the driver’s seat backrest — please refer to the photos. Overall, the car presents very well.

All equipment is reported to function properly, including the air conditioning and sunroof.

  • Exterior condition

The owner believes the paintwork to be original. There are older stone chips that have been touched up, a scratch on the rear quarter panel, and a few small rust bubbles on the right front wing. Naturally, the paint shows signs of age and use over the years.

If desired, the car could certainly benefit from a full respray to achieve concours-level presentation — but at the same time, a car is only original once. Please refer to the photos for further details.

The underside appears to have held up well. See photos for more information.

The trailer light connector needs to be replaced.

  • General condition

A Swedish-market T-Gul that spent the past 10 years in Finland and has now returned home. There are some cosmetic imperfections that can be addressed gradually over time. A car with great potential that has not been modified, abused, or tuned to pieces.

Owner's comment

This particular example is one of just 321 Swedish-market cars sold in total. Delivered new in November 1995, its original Swedish registration number was JOE199. To the best of my knowledge, it is equipped with every available factory option offered in 1995. For the past ten years, the car has been owned by a collector in Finland. I brought it back to Sweden during the autumn of 2025, and it was re-registered in Sweden in March 2026. At that time, the car underwent a complete registration inspection as well as a standard vehicle inspection, passing without remarks and even receiving praise from the inspectors. The car comes with a complete service history, along with a large collection of receipts, manuals, and documentation. All technical systems are functioning correctly, and the air conditioning blows cold. The timing belt has been replaced, and the car has recently been thoroughly inspected and serviced. In my opinion, the car is in exceptional overall condition considering its 31 years of age. The paintwork remains in original condition and presents very well, with no obvious door dings or dents. Naturally, as with any 31-year-old original paint car, there are touched-up stone chips and minor cosmetic imperfections. However, we have deliberately left the paintwork exactly as it was when I purchased the car, carrying out only a professional machine polish. Two sets of Volvo R wheels are included, one of which is fitted with friction winter tyres. The wheels shown in the photos are fitted with summer tyres.

Facts about the model

With the introduction of the 850 model, Volvo entered a new era. After 65 years of rear-wheel-driven cars, the company finally made the transition to front-wheel drive. The new model also introduced a host of other innovations, including an all-new transversely mounted five-cylinder engine, the new Delta-link rear axle, the SIPS side-impact protection system, self-adjusting front seat belts, and more.

It was a massive investment for its time — estimated at SEK 16 billion by the time the model was completed and unveiled in 1991. While Volvo retained its core values of quality and safety, the brand simultaneously moved further into the premium segment and adopted a far more modern and sporting image.

The project, internally known as “Galaxy,” had actually been initiated as early as 1978 under the leadership of PG Gyllenhammar. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard, the new Volvo stood proudly on display at the Globe Arena premiere presentation on June 11, 1991, leaving the automotive world in awe.

Between 1992 and 1996, new variants appeared continuously. Initially launched as a four-door saloon, the range expanded in 1993 with Volvo’s trademark five-door estate version. That estate body style was even campaigned successfully in touring car racing — an excellent move for both publicity and brand repositioning.

The Volvo 850 T-5R, first known as the “T-Gul” (“T-Yellow”), was produced between 1994 and 1996 as model years 1995–1996. At the time, it was Volvo’s fastest, most powerful, and most expensive production car ever built. The launch cars were painted yellow — giving rise to the nickname — although more discreet colours became available later during production. The model was later followed by the red 850 R, often referred to as the “T-Röd.”
