"A 100-plus-year-old machine that still runs."

Description

In 1919, in the shadow of a Europe still recovering from the First World War, an American machine found its way onto the roads around Malung — where gravel meets forest, and where vehicles had to endure rough conditions and hard work. Here, the sidecar proved its worth: stable, heavy, and built to handle the demanding roads of the era. It was never fast, but it was dependable.

This is not just any motorcycle. It was originally sold in Sweden and had already lived a long life before being carefully restored and brought back piece by piece to its present condition. The restoration itself was carried out quite some time ago, and the bike has since developed a beautiful and appealing patina, where everything does not appear overly perfect or excessively polished.

The Harley is currently unregistered and has never been issued new license plates, leaving it in a sense suspended between two worlds — complete, yet not fully returned to the road.

This motorcycle is more than 100 years old, and examples like this rarely come up for sale — even more rarely in running and usable condition. Old registration documents and additional historical paperwork are included with the motorcycle.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starting this machine requires a certain kind of person — it is far more involved than simply kicking it to life. Once running, both the engine and drivetrain perform well. The rest of the motorcycle’s Spartan equipment functions as it should too.

  • Exterior condition

Very attractive paintwork. Following an older restoration, the entire motorcycle has developed the right kind of finish and character in the paint, without looking freshly restored. The saddle leather has come loose from its frame.

  • General condition

Wonderful condition. Restorations can often strip a vehicle of its soul, but not in this case. It does not appear over-restored.

Facts about the model

The 1919 Harley-Davidson 1000cc (Model F or J) with sidecar is a machine from the immediate post-war era. Powered by an F-head V-twin engine, it became highly popular for both military and civilian use. Today, these motorcycles are extremely sought-after collector’s items.

A 1919 Harley-Davidson with sidecar is characterized by the following technical details and historical heritage:

Engine: 1,000 cc (61 cubic inches) F-head V-twin engine of the inlet-over-exhaust type.
Performance: The engine produced approximately 15 horsepower, giving the combination a top speed of around 88–100 km/h depending on the weight of the sidecar and its load.
Transmission: 3-speed gearbox with hand-operated gear lever and foot-operated clutch.
Sidecar: Often mounted directly to the heavy tubular frame to create a stable combination. The sidecars were commonly equipped with leaf springs for improved comfort.

These motorcycles are exceptionally rare today.
