"Fully restored and completely roadworthy. Tax-exempt and inspection-exempt. A delight to the eye. Suitable for both private collectors and museums. There is nothing that requires immediate attention. The new owner’s task for further refinement could be to find a few minor details, such as the correct type of rear reflectors and the trim around the windshield."

Description

The car was purchased new in 1957, along with two other BMWs, by the company Löfbergs Lila in Karlstad. This particular car was assigned to Managing Director Bengt Albert Judell and given the registration number S5814. According to the current owner’s research, Löfbergs paid for the car, and the managing director received it as a company car. That can be called a successful salary negotiation in the 1950s. Managing Director Judell is also listed as the first owner on the registration certificate from 1957.

The current owner has previously restored several vintage cars. He bought this one in 2002 out of fascination for its technical design. He then restored the car over several years and completed it in 2014. The maiden voyage went to Germany, where they attended the BMW V8 Club meeting in Magdeburg. The car received 56 out of 60 possible points from the exhibition judges. In 2016, the club celebrated its 40th anniversary, and they attended the meeting again. It was a 6,000-kilometer round trip each time, totaling 12,000 kilometers for both trips. Classic Motor magazine did a feature on the car in issue 11, 2012.

The owner feels fairly certain that the current mileage of 98,690 kilometers is accurate, as the car was stored for a long time and had a well-preserved body. The owner now feels finished with the car and is ready to pass it on.

Read the owner’s comments for more information about the restoration.

Owner's comment

I bought the car from a helicopter mechanic through mutual acquaintances. At that time, it was partially disassembled. The body was in very good condition, but the interior was sun-bleached. I completely rebuilt the engine, including replacing two liners. I had the entire undercarriage blasted for safety and then primed it with epoxy. You don’t want any unpleasant surprises once the restoration is complete. I purchased original fabric for the interior from Top’n Trim in Helsingborg. Then I bought an industrial sewing machine and learned the craft of using it. So, the entire interior, including the new headliner, I sewed myself. It took three attempts before I was satisfied with the headliner. I had the bumpers re-chromed. Now, the BMW and I have experienced everything from the complete restoration to trips across the continent. It’s time for someone else to enjoy the company.

Facts about the model

The model earned the nickname “Baroque Angel” due to its bulbous and curvy body design and extensive chrome detailing. It was an expensive car, which made it somewhat difficult to sell on the Swedish market. In its final years, the car was sold under the model designation 3200 instead of the previous 501/502.
