Facts about the model

The Volvo 245 was produced in over 1 million units from 1974 to 1993. The majority of the production was exported, primarily to the United States. Today, there are approximately 25,000 cars remaining in Sweden. Most of them have been worn out, and many older models have rusted away. The final model years had better rust protection, with lower parts of the body made of galvanized sheet metal, which helped them withstand rust better.

Production of the Volvo 245 ceased in March 1993, and between 1991 and 1993, several improvements were made, including a bonded rear window, improved insulation, rubber seals, and higher-quality carpets, among other upgrades. The original plan was to continue manufacturing the car for a few more years, as it remained popular and sold well. However, the Volvo 850, which was introduced in the fall of 1991, also became a success, and Volvo needed its production capacity for this new model. Therefore, the production of the 240 series came to an end in the spring of 1993.

Ten years later, in 2003, the 240 series was still the second most common car model on Swedish roads. However, since then, these cars have gradually disappeared. So, a well-maintained, red 245 is no longer common.

The 240 GLE was the luxury model, succeeding the GL as the base model. Initially, it had the same engine (B21E) as the earlier GL, but from 1980, it featured the B23E engine, the same as the GLT but with more chrome details and without the sport suspension.
