"The Jeep runs fine and functions well, an older restoration that is well maintained with the engine being original Jeep. Inspected for good and ready to drive."

Description

The Jeep was purchased by the current owner 5 years ago, at which time it was in this renovated condition. We believe the renovation was carried out some 10 years ago. In recent years, the vehicle has been used sparingly during the summer months and stored dry during winter.

Facts about the model

Jeep CJ-3A was introduced in 1949 as the successor to the successful CJ-2A and was manufactured by Willys-Overland until 1953. The model designation CJ stands for Civilian Jeep, which clearly shows that the vehicle was developed for civilian use after World War II, but with the same robust construction as the military Jeep models.

The CJ-3A built upon the simple and durable construction of the wartime Willys MB, but featured several improvements. The most striking change was a taller one-piece windscreen, which provided better visibility and greater comfort. The suspension was reinforced, seating comfort was improved, and the vehicle became better suited for everyday work.

Under the bonnet sat the well-known 2.2-liter four-cylinder "Go Devil" engine, which developed approximately 60 horsepower. The power was transmitted via a three-speed manual gearbox and a two-stage transfer case, which provided selectable four-wheel drive and excellent traction in difficult terrain.

The Jeep CJ-3A quickly became popular with farmers, forest owners, contractors, and government agencies. Thanks to the power take-off (PTO), it could drive various implements such as pumps, generators, saws, and agricultural equipment, making it a versatile work vehicle.

The model was exported to many countries and was also built under license, including in Japan by Mitsubishi for several years. The simple mechanics, robust frame, and light weight made the CJ-3A easy to maintain even under demanding conditions.

In 1953, the CJ-3A was replaced by the CJ-3B, which featured a higher bonnet to accommodate the more modern "Hurricane" engine. Despite this, the CJ-3A continued to be used worldwide for many decades.

Today, the Jeep CJ-3A is a sought-after classic. Well-preserved or correctly restored examples are valued for their historical significance, their simple yet effective construction, and their outstanding off-road capabilities. It is considered one of the most iconic civilian Jeep models and laid the foundation for the long tradition of four-wheel-drive work and leisure vehicles that Jeep is still known for.
