"A Thunderbird from the critically acclaimed Super Coupe version launched in 1989. This car came to Sweden early and has had relatively few owners and been driven sparingly. In its day, the model was fully equipped and by many experienced as a European roadster, yet still with classic American character. There are details to attend to for a new owner, but overall it is a well-maintained car."

Description

This vehicle was registered for traffic in Sweden on 10 July 1992, reportedly imported as personal effects. After a couple of shorter ownerships, it was owned by a third owner from 1997 for just over 27 years. It was mainly used for transport to the golf course. Two years ago it was taken over by the current owner, but for a time it was registered to a friend who did not drive it much. When the current owner purchased it, he went through the car, fixed the brakes and carried out a service with oil and filter. The odometer reading now is 59,482 miles, equivalent to 95,770 km. According to information, the odometer reads miles and the speedometer km/h. The car comes with a Haynes manual for the model and two sets of keys. It is inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Started easily and ran well in engine and drivetrain. During a brief test drive, everything from steering, clutch, gearbox, road-holding and brakes functioned well. A comfortable and pleasant car.

Not inspected on a lift and an older car can certainly present surprises, but what could be seen underneath looked good.

  • Interior condition

Original interior in good condition with comfortable seats and rear bench. Minor issues with the seatbelts, but one quickly gets used to them. Door panels, trim panels, headliner and carpets are in good condition. One seam has come loose on the driver's seat backrest side. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard and gauges are in good condition. All electrical functions work, but the rear-view mirror has come loose and is included. A temporary mirror is currently in place. The AC functioned last year but needs servicing now. The original JBL sound system retains its integrated CD unit (disconnected), but the radio unit has been replaced with a newer one. Tight roof opening with electric function. Works well, but parts around the button/controls have come loose (included).

  • Exterior condition

It appears to be original paintwork, but there are signs of repair to, for example, the front bumper. Otherwise it is in good condition given its age and mileage, with some minor scuffs, stone chips and scratches. Glass, trim, emblems and lighting details are in good condition. There is paint wear on trim and details that can be touched up if desired. Nice wheels and newer tyres. Engine and boot compartments are in good condition.

  • General condition

American cars from the 1980s and 1990s are not entirely common in Sweden, but we have here both an exciting model and an example in fine usable condition with details to look over. Together with the low mileage, this Thunderbird makes for an interesting classic and enthusiast car.

Facts about the model

Ford Thunderbird was GM's response to Ford's entry into the "sports car class" with the Chevrolet Corvette. The model was manufactured between 1955 and 1997, only to be resurrected from 2002-2005.

Initially, it was a pure two-seater with sports car ambitions. As early as 1958, it became a four-seater and more of a Grand Touring car. During the 1960s, it even had four doors for a period.

Like many American cars during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, the model grew and shrank alternately. When the tenth generation was presented in the late 1980s, they had found their way back to a combination of sports and GT ambitions, both in design and equipment. It was clear that they were now competing with European cars in the same class. It was built on the MN12 platform with a new chassis where the rigid rear axle was a thing of the past, which improved handling and driving pleasure, although they retained rear-wheel drive. However, they chose not to use a turbo, but rather a supercharger for better torque at lower revolutions. The motoring press was overjoyed and claimed that the Thunderbird had never been better. Motor Trend also named the model "Car of the Year" at its 1989 launch. The engine was initially a 3.8-litre supercharged V6 with intercooler that produced 210 hp. In addition to being offered with a five-speed gearbox, it featured adjustable suspension, limited-slip differential, and ABS brakes as standard. Despite a strong start with sales figures exceeding 100,000 units per year, sales declined and the last car was built in Ohio in September 1997. The saga of the Thunderbird was over. But not quite, as so many other manufacturers dusted off one of their classics around the millennium, Ford included. The eleventh generation Thunderbird, a tribute to its origins, in a two-seater version reminiscent of the first generation, was manufactured from 2002-2005. In total, Ford has manufactured 4.2 million T-birds.
