"Worthy representative of Volvo's T-badged fives, albeit with a considerable mileage. Worth preserving and mechanically sound enough for enthusiast use."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner from Västra Frölunda outside Gothenburg in September 1996. The car has had seven actual private users, with one owner from Sollentuna who, over more than 20 years, appears to have driven the majority of the car's total mileage of just over 334,000 km. Over the last 12 years, it has been driven no more than approximately 20,000 km. The most recent cam belt replacement was performed in 2024 at 322,510 km and the most recent oil service was carried out very recently, but is not noted in the service book. The most recent approved inspection was completed 2025-06-26 and the car will be delivered with a new inspection.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine feels as it should and the gearbox shifts smoothly. The car has never been chip-tuned or had its control unit manipulated. New suspension struts, top mounts and dampers give a lively and tight feeling on the road. For the automatic gearbox, Volvo chose to limit the power to 225 hp instead of the manual version with 250 hp.

  • Interior condition

Surprisingly good condition of the seat upholstery relative to the mileage. The alcantara fabric usually shows wear, but here it has held up well. The door panels, headliner and instrument panel likewise, but a small tear above the glove compartment. Well-preserved and featuring classic masur birch wood trim typical for the model. The cargo curtain has been removed and lost by a previous owner as is often the case. A small cover cap remains and is a reminder of the curtain. The air conditioning with a new element blows cold and effectively. The driver's seat power adjustment rattles slightly at times, otherwise the trip computer and all electrical functions work fine.

  • Exterior condition

Nice paint with some minor signs of wear at the left front splash guard and on the tailgate. Newly renovated original wheels with newer Lassa tyres from 2021.

  • General condition

Pleasant and genuine overall impression where the original character and mechanical care stand out. Despite its relatively long mileage, it is a sensible original car with good collector status.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 850 launched in the 1990s took an unexpected turn when Volvo presented the T-5R models in 1994 and 1995. Following the somewhat unexpected and great success of the limited and pioneering T-Yellow, the manufacturer chose to follow up on the concept. For the model years 1996 and 1997, the upgraded Volvo 850 R was launched. It was the car's red colour (colour code 609) that quickly and logically coined the name T-Red. The engine was a further development of the now classic five-cylinder B5234T5. By raising the output to 250 hp (225 hp for the automatic version, as in the auction car) and a torque of 350 Nm, the model became one of the fastest and most powerful standard cars in the marque's history at that time. The gearbox was reinforced and the car was equipped with a limited-slip differential with viscous coupling to effectively transfer all power to the road. The performance was remarkable for its time with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. Visually, the car stood out with an aggressive front, a wing on the sedan version and 17-inch alloy wheels. The interior was characterised by exclusive and light material choices with leather and alcantara, and burr birch wood trim. The model was available as both a sedan and an estate. Today, the red performance version is a sought-after collector car and has become a modern colour-coded classic from the marque.
