"A Volvo that is in perfect condition in the sense that the interior is neat and the paint is shiny, while at the same time it has minor cosmetic imperfections so you don't need to be afraid to use the car."

Description

Swedish Volvo 1800 S owned by two brothers 1989–2025. In 2004, the car was repainted in its original color and has since been used sparingly during the summer months. The current owner purchased the Volvo less than a year ago and has made several improvements to the car. However, due to a knee problem, he has realized that he should not keep his 1800 S.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts and runs well in the engine and gearbox, however the fan belt squeaks occasionally at certain RPMs. In one of the pictures, there is an extension on the clutch pedal that the owner needs to be able to drive the car, which will be removed before delivery. The owner does not remember when it was last serviced, but the engine oil looks light and good. The overdrive and electrical functions such as windshield wipers work. A more modern radio/CD player is installed and functional.

  • Interior condition

Essentially a fine interior with a few minor exceptions. The red leather upholstery is in very good condition. The door panels and headliner are intact. The carpet is somewhat worn and faded but whole. The speakers in the shelf above are not securely mounted. The dashboard is repaired with black tape above the instrument cluster and the gauge glass for the tachometer is cracked.

  • Exterior condition

The 22-year-old paint is okay, but up close you can see a certain orange peel effect on parts of the paint, and you can also see that not all trim was removed during the repainting. There are paint chips on the front edge of the hood, and a repair is visible on the top of the right front fender. In front of the left rear wheel, a minor rust damage is bubbling – see picture. In the door frame of the driver's door, traces of poorly executed body work are visible. At the bottom, the body sides are somewhat dented and have poor paint – see pictures. The left rear light has a repair. The chrome is pitted on the instrument illumination and door handles. Some minor damage is present on the trim strips. The passenger door cannot be opened from the outside.

  • General condition

A Volvo 1800 S in good, usable condition that runs well mechanically.

Facts about the model

In 1961, Volvo P1800 began production at Jensen in English West Bromwich. The bodies were manufactured by Pressed Steel in Scottish Linwood. The reason the sports coupe was built in Britain was that Volvo did not have capacity in Gothenburg. Gradually it became a more Swedish car. Quality problems at Jensen meant that production had to move home to Volvo's Lund factory in April 1963, when it also changed name from P1800 to 1800 S. A major novelty for the 1969 model year, which the auction car is from, was that the 1800 S received the new B20B engine with 118 hp SAE. At the same time, the model received new rear-view mirrors, alternator, dual-circuit braking system and a fan with viscous coupling. The next step in the Swedification of the 1800 came in the winter of 1968–69 when body production was moved to Olofström. The Volvo 1800 S became the 1800 E with electronic fuel injection for the 1970 model year, and for the 1972 model came the 1800 ES with a shooting brake body. In June 1973, the last units were manufactured and according to Volvo's statistics, a total of 47,855 units of the P1800, 1800 S, 1800 E and 1800 ES were built.
