"Volkswagen Cab in good enthusiast condition. Requires some minor work to become better."

Description

The current owner purchased the car in 1986 and became its third user, although it appears that a change of ownership within the family took place shortly before the sale. When she took over the car, it came with new front and rear fenders, rubber trim for the fenders, and running boards. That same year, a comprehensive restoration was carried out in which rust was addressed, the new parts were fitted, and the car was repainted. The interior was painted by hand with a brush, just as many did in those days.

The following year, 1987, the car's underside was rust-proofed to provide long-term protection against corrosion. Over the years, the car has been regularly maintained and improved. In 1990, the engine was replaced with a reconditioned exchange engine. In 1999, the generator and charging relay were replaced, and in 2006, the master brake cylinder and wheel cylinders on the rear wheels were changed. During 2016, electric windscreen washer spray was fitted to improve user-friendliness.

Most recently in 2024, the carburettor was overhauled. However, the work is not entirely complete and the car is somewhat difficult to start today. That same year, the rubber trim around the windows was also replaced. The new trim was sourced from VW import and functions as it should, but due to today's material composition, the fit does not quite match the quality of the older trim made from pure rubber. Therefore, the windows should not be wound down completely below the rubber trim level, as the trim risks being pulled down with the window and bending.

The car has today covered just over 101,000 km, which is modest for its age. During the current owner's period of ownership, it has only been driven in summer, from May to September, and only when the weather has been favourable. The documentation is well preserved, with receipts for work carried out saved, as well as the original purchase receipt from 1986.

The most recent inspections also testify to the car's honest condition. At the 2019 inspection, rust damage was noted on the right sill, while the 2021 report contained a remark about the shock absorber at the front right. Otherwise, the car's history bears witness to a vehicle that has been cared for and maintained over several decades.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine is somewhat difficult to start, but runs smoothly once started and at higher revolutions. The fuel system and ignition system may require attention. Otherwise, the car's various systems are perceived to function as they should. The fuel filler cap's finger grip is broken, see image.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in a worn and dirty/sun-faded condition, see photos. With some work it can be improved.

  • Exterior condition

Older repainting in working condition that has acquired an appealing patina. A few minor paint damage and rust spots are present, see pictures, but nothing that detracts from the overall impression of the car. The undercarriage looks good but the car has been noted by the vehicle inspection, see descriptive text. The hood is in good and fully functional condition.

  • General condition

Following servicing of the car's fuel system and potentially its ignition system, it becomes a good car with "cab" for summer outings and gatherings. A straightforward and honest VW in nice usable condition.

Facts about the model

After production of the Beetle had started, open models also appeared from 1949. There were various versions, both two and four-seater, but the Karmann versions took over. Their four-seater versions featured solid craftsmanship from the outset with good precision. This applied in particular to the convertible top arrangement in high quality and substantial materials, which also functioned in winter. The open models developed largely as a standard "Beetle".

The later models of VW Type 1 became progressively more powerful, gained larger luggage space and period-appropriate interior details for increased safety such as integrated headrests. For model year 1971 came the 1302 LS with the 1600 engine and 50 hp. For model year 1972 came the innovation of more horizontal air slots in the engine hood, now 26 in total. Otherwise a quiet year as regards changes. For 1973 came the 1303 LS with a completely new dashboard and panoramic windscreen. Externally larger rear lights and fuel filler cap with "finger grip". The following year the last LS models were imported to Sweden and the year after that the last new Cabriolet was sold in Sweden. In 1978 VW ceased manufacturing the "Beetle" in Germany but Karmann continued building the Cabriolet through 1980. Although it was a completely different car than the original more than 30 years earlier, it still had a similar feel.
