"The motorcycle has not been ridden for many years, but the engine turns over with good compression. Visually, it has a lovely patina."

Description

The motorcycle was sold new in 1973 when Flöter AB was the general agent. It had several owners until 1986 when a man from Uppsala purchased it. In 1995, the current owner's father-in-law became the owner of the bike but drove it very little, so it was laid up in 1999. The current owner bought the motorcycle from him in 2013 with the intention of making it roadworthy, but time has not permitted, and the machine has only been started occasionally, most recently 8 years ago.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Has not been started for 8 years and requires service before starting. New battery fitted and all electrics functioning. Engine turns over with good compression. Brakes are stiff. Steering lock pin and keys to steering lock included.

  • Exterior condition

Original paint with fine patina, damage on the left side of the tank. Paint chips and surface rust present as well as oxidation on certain parts. The chrome has held up well and has only pores in a few places. The saddle is cracked and partially repaired. Note that the original spark plug holder with space for three plugs is preserved.

  • General condition

Highly sought-after motorcycle that is difficult to find today, many having been ridden hard and scrapped. Here is an example that, after service and inspection, has excellent prospects of returning to the road.

Facts about the model

1973 model, H1D, is considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the finest versions of the 500 Mach III. Kawasaki sought to retain the brutal engine character while simultaneously improving roadholding and operational safety.

Technical Data
Engine: 498 cc, three-cylinder, air-cooled two-stroke
Power: approximately 60 hp at 7,500 rpm
Torque: approximately 56 Nm
Gearbox: 5-speed
Top speed: around 200 km/h
Dry weight: approximately 174 kg

1973 Innovations (H1D)
Compared to the 1972 H1B, the H1D received several improvements:
New and more reliable CDI ignition (based on the H2 750).
Carburettors adjusted for a broader and more even power delivery.
Reinforced frame and improved rear suspension for better stability.
The hydraulic steering damper replaced earlier solutions on certain markets.
New "racing-inspired" tail section similar to the larger H2 750.

Colours
The most renowned colour for 1973 is Candy Green (Kawasaki green) with black details, one of the marque's most classic finishes.

Riding Characteristics
The engine remained extremely explosive. Power came on strong from approximately 5,000 rpm, making the front wheel prone to lift. The chassis was improved compared to the first model years, but the H1D still demanded an experienced rider and respect for the rapid power delivery.

Collector Value
An original restored H1D from 1973 is highly sought-after today. Examples with correct paint, original exhaust system and matching numbers (engine and frame with correct numbers) are particularly valuable.
